So on this 67367383367228394th day of January, I’m so grateful to turn to the wisdom of these authors. If you’re looking for an agency pick me up, might I suggest checking out these glimmers of 2025.
And to order them from our local book store, Malibu Village Books.
Today, my daughter and I went to pick them up. And we talked about books that have helped us think and act in new, bolder, stronger ways and why I’m writing one.
But the premise of the book I will write this year is how women cultivate their agency — in imperfect and mysognist and even tragic structures and situations. So last week, one way I knew I could use my agency was to order several books that my colleagues and friends have published this year.
That’s all to say, January 2025 is not going to plan, and is simply not leaving me feeling like my most agentic self.
…All while the U.S. President who rose to power bragging about sexually assaulting women is spending his first days in office attacking those most marginalized and vulnerable in our country.
2025 was supposed to be the year I wrote a book about women’s agency…& it still will be…
But it will also be the year my city faced an unprecedented natural disaster, my daughter & I were displaced for 7 (& counting) weeks & I ended up back in the twilight zone of family court & custody litigation
I just received an email from my child’s school district reminding families that we are a safe haven district. I am grateful for that fact and for our school leadership. But I am horrified that email needed to be written in the first place.
Just got this email from @florenceproject.bsky.social -DOJ ordered them to stop legal orientation projects, including “Know Your Rights” presentations.
Removing ambiguity & gaining info is the foundation of agency.
When our govt doesn’t want ppl to have info, they don’t want ppl to have agency.
Thank you, Ryann! 🙏🏼🩷🫶🏼
I am finding fortitude in all the love we're receiving and witnessing. I will be sharing that love forward with our community & our city. Malibu & LA meant so much to me before these fires, and didn't think I could care for this place more. But that’s the thing about love, there's always more.
My daughter and I have evacuated and we are safe.
I am so deeply touched by the fierce and relentless outpouring of love, care and support that has been coming to my little family specifically and to Los Angeles more broadly. Thank you.
Reading together at the beach is peak Thomason family merry. ✨
(While I do tend to read with a pen, reading with a book manuscript deadline does mean more sticky notes than usual. 😂)
However you and yours do merry and happy, we’re wishing you lots of it. ❤️🩷🤍
Absolutely. The chain of texts between the pr firm just broke me.
And the fact that there’s essentially a go-to firm for smearing and silencing women…
I was just shaking by the time I finished that NYT article.
In the category of things that stun me even though I intellectually know they are predictable:
The backlash Blake Lively faced after accusing Justin Baldoni of sexual harassment & claiming the creative upper hand on the movie.
Yet another reason it was right to cancel my Amazon prime.
"messy exit" is definitely one way to say "the result of a targeted campaign of racial harassment."
wtf
Oh, the joy of submitting a manuscript, knowing it’s off your plate for a beat 👩🍳💋👌🏼
I shouldn’t be surprised anymore. But I’m still stunned every time as our country under Trump 2.0 stories keep flooding my social media.
Shame shifted.
Thrilled about the possibility that @bsky.app can be about individuals positively shaping the structures (yes, even a virtual one) they inhabit.
🤞🏼 this comes to fruition 🤞🏼
Full on 😭😭😭😭😭😭
How have I been a gender scholar for so long and today years old when I just saw Wicked for the first time???
Omg. Obsessed. 💚💚💚
I was recently on an elementary school hiring committee, and I noticed so much discussion of “project based learning” which seemed to mean so many different things depending on the person… and I thought of your book and was struck jargon monoxide isn’t just a business / business school problem. 🫠
