We just peeped in the window and found "Heat" diner Kate Mantilini is still intact, booths waiting patiently for late night fans of "Those Potatoes" and everything else to come home again. Twelve years vacant due to a landlord who wouldn't negotiate--why does L.A. allow this?

Celebrating silent cinema comedy in MacArthur Park, which has some pretty comical birds within.
ah, thank you! This one is very much a walk in the footsteps of John Bengtson, silent cinema sleuth. We miss him and are honored to share his discoveries!
Today! Come with us on a time travel trip to 1920s Westlake seeking ghosts of the great motion picture comics who transformed the city into their visionary open air back lot. Human flies and living statues, little tramps and great stone faces call to you! esotouric.com/event/silent...
A Route 66 miracle! In 2015, we climbed up to see the mothballed The Trails cocktails sign with our Duarte Historical Society pals and have been hoping so hard it would be installed again on the Mother Road. And soon it will be! www.threads.com/@signmakers_...

Let's talk Taix! Tune in to Monks & Merrill on KFI 640-AM at the top of the 1pm hour as we riff on Thursday's Cultural Heritage Commission hearing on salvaging sad scraps of signage before demolition. Should it be an L.A. landmark at all? kfiam640.iheart.com/featured/mon...

Appeal filed over the huge mansion behind Walkers Cafe, with LA City Planning accused of "a pattern of errors." planning.lacity.gov/pdiscaseinfo... Citizens shouldn't have to bird-dog our government this way. Also, where is the dumpster supposed to go?

Beneath the Hall of Records, a hidden world of concrete, cardboard boxes, golf carts and mystery puddles. How far do the tunnels go?
Have you seen the tunnel map project? If you've explored, or even if you're too scared to go in, start a comment thread!

Only three of the five Cultural Heritage Commissioners are present for this meeting which considers Taix, which creates far less opportunity for them to take a brave stand against Mitch O'Farrell's weird "preservation" scheme.
When Clifton's reopened in 2015, with grand promises that were mostly hot air, management didn't even have an MC on hand to welcome the eager patrons lined up on Broadway. Brother Pancake took it upon himself to provide this spontaneous invocation. May it rise anew!

Today at 10am, the Cultural Heritage Commission will review the fake "preservation" scheme for Taix French Restaurant advanced by Mitch O'Farrell, who has retired to his native Oklahoma and cannot be held accountable for selling out the community. Facade sign is gone sans permit.
On L.A. Eyes' Instagram feed, the immediate neighbors in the thisclose apartments are expressing quality of life concerns about the proposal for converting the Echo Park Clubhouse, which they’ve heard would more of a food court than restaurant.

Feeling powerless because the wrecking ball is itching to destroy your favorite restaurant? You have more power than you think!
It's not too late for a good Taix project. Tell the CHC to put a hold on the demo permits TOMORROW 10am at City Hall.

The golden cluster of bulbs in the star gleams like a juicy berry. Trying to date the sign led us to Yelp reviews about New Look salon owner Gerardo Gutierez, who sounds like a wonderful guy, and who passed over in 2023. RIP. Love your sign, Jerry!

That's what is being advanced after the lender says he foreclosed and evicted the longtime owner-residents, then left the buildings wide open for squatters, fires and vandals. A scandal. CD13, LADBS, LAPD did nothing to make owner to protect the community, landmark.
No apartment project submitted.
Hollywood Center Motel hearing livelier. Property owner's rep brought architect, rendering of speculative apartments with 1950s wall and neon in front. Interesting Q&A about demo by neglect, squatters, fire and unsubmitted plans. Unanimous: the "landmark" moves to City Council!
Not yet, because it's not built as because the City isn't making new Mills Act contracts now, but in the abstract it could.
Appeal denied. This Barry Building debacle is going to cost taxpayers a fortune in litigation. Do you want to pay for City Hall refusing to abide by the preservation ordinance when a billionaire wants a demo permit
You can listen to but not see what's happening at PLUM, the most dangerous and screwed up preservation vote in recent years, demolition of the Barry Building by the billionaire Mungers. www.youtube.com/live/Qozr_OI...
How come Eastside LEADS appears to have been working closely with CD14 on the Boyle Heights Community Plan but the Neighborhood Council didn't even know the years late plan was coming up for a vote?
Hi back!
Precedent this fake landmark sets could grant property tax relief for half assed salvage projects and encourages property owners to destroy historic properties with the City's support.
We're on the side of the burro and ethical, honest management of Olvera Street, which belongs to all of us. This seems like an issue that should unite right, left and all between. Why is the City treating legacy vendors like trash?
