Just popping in to say I picked up a signed copy at the British Museum last summer and just finished. I am a historian of science who teaches Western Civ at a Jr. College, so this is not my area. Not only was it a good read, but it gave me good material to use in class. Well done!

You are kind to say so.

Good morning Brandy.

I was making a “joke.” (Kinda) I was just telling a colleague the phrase “continental breakfast” only makes sense when contrasted with “full English breakfast.” So that was where my head was at. With my stomach per usual.

More like full English philosophers?

I just assume that anyone from department chair on up in any DIV I university has shitty views or is actively covering up fr someone shitty actions. Except in the athletic department, then it’s everyone.

Not me:

String 1: Pay your interns
String 2: Living wage for staff
String 3: NO WAGE THEFT (enforcement methods negotiable.)

Again, it's not about goals, but methods. The best run institutions I've ever worked for exploited their staff awfully to and committed wage theft on a massive scale and often illegally routed money to non-mission related activities. I am not funding that (were I rich enough to matter)

2) That's plebe thinking. The ultra-rich put nothing but strings on their donations from getting their names on buildings, influencing exhibit content, dictating food at receptions, etc and nobody blinks an eye. It's us poors who are expected to donate out of the goodness of our hearts. 2/3

I have worked in non-profits all my 30+ years of work (museums), and I have two reactions,
1) It's not about goals it's about methods. If I had enough $ to matter I would put strings on any money I donated. High on the list would be to pay your damn interns. Second, staff a living wage. 1/3

Counterpoint: We have plenty of Huamnists and Social Scientists. What we need are JOBS for the scholars we've already produced.

As a historian of science and scholar of 19th century natural history, my other reply to this issue is:

Just War Theory is ONLY a theory. It isn't a proven fact. We should teach the controversy.

Plus, it's a long way from Just War Theory, invented by humans, to claiming that god blesses and guides your death machines, which is what Hegseth claims and to which, I believe, the Pope was responding. We can decide if a war is jut, but god is under no obligation to agree.

Wow, diet coke prevents cancer, regular coke prevents pregnancy. If only coke zero prevented Parkinson's.

I was under no illusion I would convince the OP to declare more of their tips, so I saw no reason in getting too deep in the particulars.

Thanks for sharing. I look forward to reading this and adapting it to teaching.

And I know this is beside the point, but that whole boiling frog thing is a myth. It's right down there with sinks draining the opposite directions on either side of the equator

Re-reading Mercy of Gods now to get a running start when I leap into The Faith of Beasts. I haven't been this excited since I reread Days of Shattered Faith to prepare for Pretenders to the Throne of God. So a month or so.

Also, you know the IRS pays bounties to whistleblowers, right. There is even a form for it, the IRS 211. Anyone turning you in gets a % of recovered taxes, fees, and penalties. Anyone can dime you out. Friends, co-workers, your boss, an ex-partner...

Because it has a direct effect on how much social security you eventually collect?

Maybe not, but if you are ever involved in a divorce, business difficulties, are sued or suing, or find yourself in legal trouble or even serve as a witness, someone trained to dig up dirt on you will find it in a billable hour.

Perhaps look at it in terms of all the people who read your post and come away thinking that Protestantism and its battle with Catholicism is truly “ancient”. Ultimately, I am talking to them not you.
