1. This (recent) History Thread is about Air Attacks in Myanmar (Burma.) Since Feb. 2021 coup, military regime has constantly deployed bombing & strafing by jet & helicopter, routinely against civilian targets. #WhatsHappeningInMyanmar
"Extreme violence continues to afflict women daily in Myanmar, from airstrikes to shelling, to arson, to ground raids where rape is still used as a weapon of war. With no legal framework to reinforce & protect their rights, they are at grave risk"
Important piece by Maggi here.
My latest for @myanmar-now.bsky.social on how the sham election by the military junta will have disastrous impacts on women and girls, in yet another setback for gender equality in #Burma.

❌ ASEAN ❌
Stop supporting the #Myanmar junta.
Stop the flow of funds.
Stop the flow of aviation fuel.
ASEAN governments & biz continue to fuel international crimes in Myanmar.
Its time to END complicity in #WarCrimes.

The junta's airstrike in Kawkariek township, #Karen State, left four killed, including children & 35 wounded. The strike targeted a house being used to teach young students. Airstrikes are frequently carried out with little warning or time to flee.

Children in Burma cannot even attend school safely as the junta deliberately undermines their access by not hesitating to drop bombs or conduct indiscriminate attacks. A generation of children risks losing educational opportunities, denied by the military.
The latest research by @ndburma.bsky.social finds mismanagement + weaponization of humanitarian assistance by the military junta in their briefing paper, "Beneath the Cracks." Despite the 'ceasefire,' attacks by the regime have continued across the country, killing & injuring dozens.

My latest co-authored piece on the gendered impacts of the earthquake in #Burma:
"There is a clear & significant gendered dimension to the impacts of disasters, made even more stark by the military’s mismanaged response and further aggravated by funding disruptions."
myanmar-now.org/en/news/unce...
This direct undermining of local organizations and their capacity to deliver life-saving emergency assistance, as they have done for decades, is not only ignorant but plays into the junta's hand. By donating to groups with MoUs with the military, aid will undoubtedly be weaponized.
“The junta’s callous contempt for human life, even in the face of widespread earthquake devastation, underscores its unsuitability to oversee aid—and more importantly, its willingness to manipulate any humanitarian response,” the civil society groups stated.
myanmar-now.org/en/news/myan...
Critical call urging localized assistance to survivors and victims of the devastating earthquake in #Burma. The junta is not a trusted or reliable partner in aid relief, especially as airstrikes by the military continue to target emergency areas. Assistance is most effective when channelled locally.
Myanmar military jets and paramotors have been conducting airstrikes post-earthquake as the junta seeks global aid for victims.
❌ These airstrikes must be stopped to ensure safe aid delivery. Governments should act now to save lives.

"I was sleeping at my home on September 8th when the soldiers arrived by military truck. They arrested me for abusing drugs, and they threatened me with jail or to join the army. I said I would go to jail. They forced me to sign a document, but I refused. Then, I was enlisted."

Latest briefer by @uscb4peace.bsky.social gives a critical overview of the US funding freeze, including the closure of clinics. My response to the decision also included the following: "[MAGA] seeks isolation, and foreign affairs are rooted in divisiveness."

The USAID funding cuts continue to have devastating impacts on the most vulnerable. In the #Karenni refugee camps, the conditions are now being described as "not normal. Everything is severely limited." Shame on the Trump administration.

The US funding cuts have had immediate impacts on refugees and #IDPs. @borderconsortium.bsky.social says the food in the camps is quickly running out: "Nobody knows what could happen if there are no more funds at the end of March."

A 30-year-old refugee from #Burma lasted two weeks without dialysis before she died. Her death comes after the US Administration suspended life-saving aid. This decision must be immediately reversed as thousands will continue to suffer in its aftermath.
