As a former consultant to about a dozen federal agencies, I know as well as anyone that there is room for improvement in effectiveness and efficiency across our government. Every problem requires a different tool, and improving how government works - a central focus of my career - requires a broad array of tools. DOGE's actions, however, are like a doctor using a machete when they should've used a consultation with the patient, an MRI, and a scalpel. Sure, the doctor may have gotten rid of some cancerous tissue in the foot, but now they've amputated a leg. And without anesthesia. I don't pretend to know what comes next, but I know that such unstrategic sloppiness creates even more risk to our national security, our economy and our society overall. You, too, will be affected — if you haven't been already. Devoted public servants protect our communities from disasters, keep our airplanes safely in the sky, combat child trafficking, and ensure our water is safe to drink. Don't mistake these mass layoffs as affecting only "other people," as their impact will ripple outwards in the weeks and months to come. This is only the beginning.
