A screenshot of two slides. Slide 1:
Unofficial non-race aid stations
These vary from tuck & honesty boxes to garden sheds
We have no control over whether / when they are there
SST may be at road heads with water supplies but may need to deploy
DO NOT RELY ON ANY OF THESE - assume they will not be there
Shops & pubs are available at their usual opening hours
Alongside this there’s a photo of some snacks on a table
Slide 2:
What can you expect from us at main CPs?
Respite from harsh trail conditions
Food, drink, & a dry place to regroup Somewhere to sleep
Access to drop bags for supplies / replacement kit
Opportunity to reset mentally - this is pivotal
Access to medical care
Maybe even a hug!
A screenshot of two slides. Slide 1:
What don't we provide?
Foot care - this is your responsibility
Strategic decisions
Alarm calls — you must manage your own timings
Alongside this are 2 photos, both by Spine photographer Andrew Hendry. The first is of some steaming feet, the second of a runner sleeping against a tree
Slide 2:
What do we expect from you?
Clear communication re plans & needs
Self-sufficiency
Consideration for other runners
Politeness to crew
Tidy kit management - you must dispose of sharps in the sharps bin
Patience & focus (lists of your CP tasks in drop bags can be helpful)
Flexible onward travel plans - these are entirely your responsibility, not ours
A screenshot of two slides. Slide 1:
Cut-offs
The cut-offs are determined at specific entry points to CP buildings / tent villages
We also have a grounds boundary within which you cannot stop after leaving
You may continue to do admin/ bivvy once beyond the grounds
Alongside this is an aerial shot of one of our checkpoint locations with indicators showing the building entrance and grounds boundary
Slide 2:
Penalties - what are they given for?
Rule breaking - receiving outside support, pacing, failure to inform HQ of bivvying
Short cuts
Kit infringements
Alongside this is a photo of a female referee pointing
A screenshot of the webinar. I am on the right of the screen presenting. On the left is a slide about calculation of short cut penalties with a map showing an example of a shortcut and the text:
Penalties - how are they calculated?
Short cuts:
Time gained calculated A-B
Compared with A-B on race route
Comparison with runners in same cohort
Time gain doubled for penalty
Really enjoyed presenting on Anna Troup’s women-focussed webinar on Spine Checkpoints
It’s now on the race’s YouTube channel & will be great resource for anyone entering the Spine Race who wants to understand what to expect of checkpoints and what the checkpoint teams expect of them
