Hey 🧪 these people make fantastic stuff! And they could make it about your stuff! But only if they know about your stuff!

Welp. I blocked them bc they QTed me. I'm not going to put their filth back on y'all's timeline with a screenshot.

Just know that people who think kids don't understand concepts of gender are very, completely wrong. It comes from within, but only after they are steeped in the attitudes WE show them

I know I should let this go bc buffoons like that pass through all the time

Something about the way they're claiming expertise on what kids know is really getting to me

It makes me prouder than I can say that my oldest seems to be in the "we support humans" clique at school

Now that they're older, they know multiple kids who asked to be called by different pronouns and/or names by 6th grade

But what they talk to me about is still the adults: I know exactly whose parents have refused to change what they call their kids, and what kids we're ready to offer help to

I am incandescent.

When they were ~3, my kids didn't know any more than we told them about what it meant to be transgender. But they noticed (and told me about it) every time someone asked my son when he'd get a boy haircut, or told him he shouldn't be wearing a skirt

On this day in 2019, I witnessed one of the coolest things ever. A lenticular cloud lit-up by a setting sun over the Perito Morena Glacier in Argentina.

Science is a container ship carrying 200,000 tons of observations. The weight comes from years of hard work mining and refining these observations.

The ship can’t turn on a dime, so scientific knowledge often changes slowly.

And I think the public’s expectations don’t always match this truth.

I mean, shoot your shot, IMO. I know this is joke-ish, but I've been seeing these job ads for months.

I would LOVE to see how you put together that application : )

Been trying to figure out why this gives me so much ick

I think it's because the money in making a tool specifically for science can't be as good as making a tool for other sectors. So this is about power, prestige, and control. And motives like that taking that particular name- blargh

It makes my skin crawl that they named it Rosalind

Machine learning has been part of advancing science in very powerful ways for years

But I don't trust that OAI respects the scientific process at all, and assume that many people will be extremely busy not using this tool

Writing a YouTube script and thankful for everyone fighting for open access to be affordable for scientists 🧪

I have no official institutional affiliation and being able to read these papers fully (not just abstracts) is tangibly enhancing my understanding and, thus, the quality of my pitch/product

Nobody is talking about the $$$ pushing companies away from their OG markets and into (AI) tech:

Niantic made Pokemon Go
Sold
THEN it announced its AI division

Allbirds made shoes
Sold
THEN it announced its AI ... thing

The pattern is acquisition, then pivot. I would read so many words about this

Thanks to @awisnational.bsky.social at Emory for having me! I love doing career panels because I love trying to make it easier for others in passion jobs

Plus it reminds me why I'm in this field in the first place ⬇️

2. How to shift from “transactional” to “relational” networking

❌ “I can do X for you if you’ll do Y for me”
✅ Show up for your colleagues, with encouragement and advice over time

- Goal: community support, not individual favors
- Result: connections, not extractions

1. How to cold contact ppl

“Informational interview”: message emphasizes a connection (school, etc), asks for a 15 min call to learn about their career & current job

Job seekers expand their network while learning & develop a reputation for being driven/curious. Can ask for a heads up on job ads

Me, smiling to camera in front of my desk, wearing the outfit for the career panel I did yesterday- yellow shirt under a black jean jacket. I felt cool but also professional in that combo, which is why this selfie even exists in the first place

Students were most interested in 2 pieces of advice at a #SciComm career panel I did yesterday. I think this advice applies to folks in any 🧪 field

Almost every single job I’ve gotten has been bc someone knows me. But what does it really mean to network in a way that leads to opportunities?

Nerding out: I cannot imagine a more perfect image to get a certain type of person to feel the impact of this headline. Its cartoon eyes are squinched exactly the way I would expect, it is poofy, it looks like it wants a hug

Hats off to whoever suggested this image/headline combo for the article

We will fight and win, and they cannot stop us from doing good in the meantime.

I just said that in a #SciComm career panel and I find that I mean it very much. I was talking about science careers in this economy, but I believe it more generally.

And in case you needed to hear it, now you have.
