It will take approximately two hours for the device to “swim” a two km section of the pipe and collect data. We expect to receive the results in about a month. The data will provide important information on the condition of the pipe and help inform our future plans.
A PipeDiver is a tool used to assess the condition of a pipe, using ultra sonic technology to understand the thickness of the pipe walls. It operates while the pipe is full of water, which means water service to Calgary and area should not be impacted. Water restrictions are not planned.
This week we are assessing the section of feeder main running from the Bearspaw Water Treatment plant to the 33 Avenue N.W. pump station with a robotic PipeDiver.

Hi Rose - you can continue to check in on our Daily water use dashboard (which doesn't just run during restrictions) by clicking the link on the right hand side of our web page: calgary.ca/savewater
Another feeder main shutdown is planned this fall as we bring the replacement pipe online. We’ll share more details in the coming months, including what to expect and water restrictions that will be required.
Thank you to everyone who made water-saving changes. You are all water heroes.
So what’s next?
April 9-11: a mechanical pipe diver device will inspect the Bearspaw South Feeder Main. We don’t anticipate water restrictions being required.
Even though the reinforcement work is done, there’s still a risk of another break until the new pipe is in place at the end of the year.
Over the past few weeks, crews have worked around the clock (through snow & shine), to make necessary reinforcement repairs to the Bearspaw Feeder Main.
Calgarians stepped up by saving water - helping crews keep the work moving and getting us to the point where restrictions could be lifted today.
We hope you agree that many of the simple water-saving habits you’ve built over the last month, like full loads of laundry or finding other small ways to save water, are worth keeping up. Everyday water conservation is critical and helps support our long-term water supply.
Thank you, Calgary and neighbours, for saving water with us these past few weeks. It truly made a difference, and we couldn’t have done it without you.
The moment we’ve all been waiting for… all water restrictions are officially lifted. 🙌
The feeder main is filled, water quality testing is complete, and the pipe has been reconnected to the rest of the water distribution system.
