Other states have fought back, pushing initiatives to counter the work to steal seats. Today, Virginia votes on a map that balances efforts taken in places like Texas and Missouri and provides repercussions for cheating. I encourage all my friends there to vote yes.
Last year, the Trump administration ordered compliant Republican officials across the country to redraw districts mid-decade in an effort to drown out Black and progressive voices, including here in Kansas City breaking up long time shared communities of interest.
That’s what I shared with our folks… it’s functionally open it seems.
I’m told no.
Riverfront 🤝 River Market
A great new path and investment in Kansas City’s infrastructure, linking two great neighborhoods down by the river!
I understand for some of you today is a special holiday. I understand, and enjoy your rights in Kansas City and the Missouri surrounds!
That said, please refrain from puffing around playgrounds, parks with kids, and folks not looking to be bothered.
Thanks! Have a great day. 💚
Got out to see some new Kansas City infrastructure this evening and met all types of new friends on the riverfront. Wonderful folks enjoying our city.
I hope you all had a great weekend! Yes, this is my preferred fit.
Following NASCAR, got to talk America’s cities with Reverend Al Sharpton: where we continue to see declines in violent crime, economic and population growth, and where we will never stop welcoming all!
The “Cars” movies and Hot Wheels have him acting like he knows how to run @nascar.com
A graduate of Southeast High and Kansas State, Carrie was an entrepreneur of unmatched skill who shaped communications efforts in our city for 40 years. She lived a long battle with illness and our only solace today is that she is at peace.
We are sad that Carrie died because she still had so damn much to give. Few worked harder, lived more loyally, and loved more than Carrie Stapleton.
That day, Carrie was still talking a mile a minute, mentioning new work projects (always finding new endeavors), speaking about her faith, and acting like those poor nurses with her cared about whatever local political news existed that day.
A few weeks back, I took a detour from the schedule to visit with my mom and a friend of ours at the hospital, Carrie Stapleton. Carrie was, until her passing this week, the go-to guru for communications in Kansas City, particularly for those who knew and cared about Black voices.
It was an honor to spend my Saturday welcoming over 50 new members of Kansas City’s Bravest at the Kansas City Fire Department. Their commitment to service, courage, and camaraderie as a class will serve our community well for generations to come.
Weather is about to get rough out there, Kansas City.
Severe storms expected this afternoon into evening. Damaging winds, hail, and possible tornadoes. Check in with your people. Check get warnings. Stay safe this weekend.
Be there for anyone suffering from or fleeing abuse. You can never help them too much along the way, and a check in is always warranted even if it’s just sharing you are there for them at a time of change.
My prayers for the children and family of Dr. Cerina and Justin Fairfax.
For 60 years, Hyman Brand Hebrew Academy has provided strong educational opportunity for Jewish children and families in Kansas City. It was an honor to visit today with old friends, young learners, and talented AP Government students in a vital part of Kansas City’s Jewish community.
The KC Parks fountains are back on for the season!
Happy Fountain Day, Kansas City.
Another absolutely special day in Kansas City.
Thank you to Peter and Veronica Mallouk for ensuring that every child in every part of our region is part of inclusion for folks of all abilities and needs. Lucky to have Variety KC.
Such an amazing day for our kids and our community. The first investment goes to Blunt Park over 670, putting inclusion at the heart of our downtown.
Thank you to the Mallouk family!
Today was special in our community, as we celebrated a $30M investment by Veronica and Peter Mallouk with Variety KC to build ten parks, ensuring every kid in Kansas City is within ten minutes of a park accessible for youth of all abilities. Inclusion matters for all of our kids.
Good morning, Kansas City and surrounds! Have a fantastic week.
Just wrapped 20 hours in New Orleans for Democratic Party meetings and speaking, as we look to keep flipping legislative, mayoral, and congressional seats in Missouri, Kansas, and America. The work continues, but there’s always a little time for dancing with the people!
I’m working on it, y’all.
And for students considering next steps, two decades on, I still am grateful I chose to study law. Lawyers are an imperfect lot, but at our core, we are still trying to make the world a better place.
I recently sat down with Cornell Law School, my alma mater, to share my journey in life and the law for a project they’re working on. It was a good chat that ended well at Gates Bar-B-Que.
If you’re needing advice or sitting with an extra few minutes, check it out.

Being able to hear is cool!
The job is never dull. It was an honor to meet the beautiful and talented Ms. Patti LaBelle.
Yesterday, Kansas City eliminated outdated minimum parking requirements across much of the city. The old rules drove up construction costs, kept storefronts empty, and made it harder to build affordable housing. This is how we build a more walkable, more affordable Kansas City.
Yesterday at Hope Faith we opened new shower facilities, funded by a grant administered by our outstanding Housing Department.
Kansas City is doing work for all of our people. Proud of it. Stay tuned for more.
