Interestingly:
Confidence judgments were weakly and inconsistently related to accuracy.
More confidence ≠ better calibration
In other words:
Self-assessments tracked actual performance much more closely in open-ended questions.
Generative tasks seem to provide more diagnostic cues.
But here is the key finding:
Metacognitive resolution was substantially higher in the open-ended format.
👉 Students were better at distinguishing when they performed well vs poorly.
Main results:
• Higher performance in multiple-choice
• Higher confidence in multiple-choice
So far, nothing surprising.
We compared multiple-choice vs open-ended questions in a real university exam (N = 150).
Students completed both formats and reported:
• Self-assessments
• Confidence judgments

All designed for transparency and usability in systematic reviews.
RMQS takes a different approach:
Instead of scoring studies, it:
✔ decomposes quality into explicit criteria
✔ defines clear coding rules
✔ documents decisions in a reproducible way
→ A more diagnostic approach to methodological assessment
Methodological quality is central to research synthesis.
But in practice, assessments often rely on:
* unclear criteria
* implicit decisions
* aggregated scores that hide important details
This can reduce transparency and interpretability.
