Yeah I get that, he was totally different live though and his music was a lot less structured and lot more free.
to be fair i get why others didn't like it, they turned up for purple rain and sign of the times and instead got 10min solo's that made a nod to bitches brew era miles davis' and parliament/funkadelic.
He had loads of James browns live band with him when I saw him including Fred Wesley and bootsy, the set was probably closer to jazz than pop, which left a lot of the radio two mums a bit disappointed but I loved it
