I had a lovely chat last year with Jamie Benning at the @filmumentaries.bsky.social podcast where I got to enthuse about making pictures and influential 1980s BBC science documentaries.
This writer gets it - Fix your hearts, or die.
The same is true for picture making too. The process of thinking/feeling/working to make the image is the point. Otherwise we are all just egesting ‘content’.
This puts it well & it’s a point I keep making about why using AI to write is so flattening. Writing is the process of working out & refining what you think. If I write an article, I’m not just generating 1000 plausible words. I’m trying to articulate ideas with precision, & challenging myself.
Several obituaries have described him as a surrealist. That doesn’t seem exactly right. The US is a surrealist country about which he made realist films. I can’t think of another filmmaker who ‘got’ post-War America like he did. We are unlikely to see another.
It’s going to take us a long time to understand what we have lost with David Lynch’s passing.
