🌊 If the AMOC collapses, the ocean could flip from a carbon sink → carbon source.
Mechanism:
↓ NADW formation
↓ Carbon sequestration efficiency
↑ Atmospheric CO2
Net effect: a shift toward ocean-driven carbon release and enhanced warming (positive feedback)

PhD Position in Methane Seepage & Deep-Sea Exploration at @tamu.bsky.social 🌊
I'm looking for a new team member for an NSF-funded project investigating the dynamics of methane seepage along the US Atlantic Margin.
Full details and application process available here: risingfluids.org/phd-usam-adv-1
Cherry Hill is one of 13 South Jersey school districts that is set to receive a reduction in state funding for the 2026-27 school year under Gov. Mikie Sherill's proposed budget.
My point is that if we lose talented young scientists now, it’s going to be a multigenerational gap. It’ll take the US a very long time to recover from this wanton destruction (if ever).
30+ years ago, I learned an analytical technique as a summer intern that set the course of my career. Now, I'm the only scientist in the world still using it. The scientists we don't train today because of funding and program cuts from the Trump regime are the scientists we won't have in the future.
Check out this open PhD student position to work with Dr. Davide Oppo on some exciting methane seep questions!

The report highlights the grim state of freshwater ecosystems, degraded marine and terrestrial ecosystems, and the risk of extinction for many species. But it also emphasizes the potential for improvement through conservation, restoration, and renewed connections between people and nature.
New paper out! We sat down and compiled all viral work in marine sediments. The water column has been getting a second look for viral interactions, its time for sediment to have the same!

Meanwhile, many of us have to think about how we wind down our lab operations in the next month, while proposals languish in purgatory. For what?

Another day of repeating the mantra, there are no banned words, just words that will prevent an otherwise fundable application from being funded…

Next column will address needed guardrails for private funding of science, esp. in light of #Epstein/ #Summers etc.

MEGAN KELLER WITH A DIRTY DRAG MOVE AND A GOLD MEDAL WINNING GOAL 🇺🇸 🇺🇸 🇺🇸 🇺🇸
We are hosting a scientific ocean drilling workshop here in Austin May 19-21 to develop a drilling proposal to investigate submarine slope failure dynamics and their relationship with gas, hydrates, and ocean currents around the Cape Fear Slide. Details here: usoceandiscovery.org/workshop-lan...

👏 Heroic effort to extract a H₂ record from ice cores 👏
The samples had to measured in the field immediately after drilling (i.e. fresh out the oven 🥮) to prevent the tiny H₂ molecules from leaking out.

🧂 Pourquoi l’eau de mer est-elle salée ?

It’s salty. It’s full of carbon. Its upwelling may have helped end the last ice age. It’s…the salty blob!

⚒️🧪Fiery Mud Volcano Eruption!
The Daşmərdan (Dashmardan) mud volcano in Azerbaijan erupted ~16:50 on the 30th Jan 2026. The eruption lasted ~15 mins and was accompanied by a pillar of flame several hundred meters high. Daşmərdan had previous documented eruptions in 1866, 1954, 1976, 1986 and 2011.
Many programs (like ours) allow students to transition from MS to PhD after a year if everything is going well. This provides the student an opportunity to really "feel" the various aspects of grad school, to come to an informed decision. Ask prospective advisors if their program does that. 2/2
My advice to undergraduates:
Do *not* sign on to a PhD just because it's a 'next step' and you don't know what else to do. A master's program is a much better option in that scenario. You can find out if you genuinely enjoy the endeavor and, if not, it's only 2 years and you get a great degree! 1/2
They are not stopping at immigrants.
“We think Philadelphia will be a great NWSL market one day," commissioner Jessica Berman told The Inquirer.
Climate scientists are also obsessed with Greenland, not because of the Mercator projection, but because the melting of the Greenland ice sheet is going to raise sea levels significantly, change ocean circulation, and be generally very bad for humanity.
I know the story is going around. This is Morristown, New Jersey. Half an hour from Newark Airport. Its on the hinterlands of New York City. It's a fight I know ICE isn't ready for.
Also, this is People magazine. It's as normal supermarket America as it gets. Let's hope this lights something.
