I fucking hate modern design philosophy.

I’m stupid. Behind all this trouble lay two settings – the only two settings in the settings menu, mind – that were turned the wrong way by default.

They were to toggle between muting the back output ports whenever a front output port is filled, and to toggle between grouping or separating inputs.

Finally “fixed” it (tricked Realtek Audio Console into something to the front panel that ends up as passable audio because it keeps defaulting to only show the mic because it doesn’t understand that front panels can have combined headset ports)

Plugged it in and it still doesn’t work. From what I can tell the case’s connector might be wired differently to the motherboard’s header, because the realtek software can’t make sense of it.

(Of courser after I typed up that whole yap I get off my ass and see that the front panel audio connector isn’t plugged in)

Literally anything could be at fault right now. Of course I could take this all to mean that the panel isn’t connected (I’m pretty sure I connected it, but I haven’t checked), or that the motherboard is simply fucked up, but because of the way the troubleshooters are set up I’ll never fucking know.

Instead it just spits out whatever audio devices it sees (it sees the audio jacks on the motherboard, but still doesn’t give any helpful info about why the one on the front is playing dead).

One problem though: you’re wearing headphones. Or maybe you don’t have a mic. Either way, the test comes up dead (no kidding, you don’t have audio). So next is a scan for driver issues. It sees none, because of bloody course it doesn’t.

Audio problem? None of the “self‐help articles” appear to be of any value at first glance. You consent to have this “get help” app scan for possible issues (¿Why does it need your consent anyway, it’s a bloody troubleshooter). It plays a tone, apparently trying to see if your mic picks it up.

I hate windows’ new design philosophy.

Everything is modular. Sure you can use that to get rid of bloat and telemetry, but it also means the specific troubleshooters for specific troubles are all rolled into one module that asks does stupid tests and asks even dumber questions.

It is kinda funny to me, but it’s also kinda grim.

Sorry for getting long there (I blame the fact that this app has a button to chain a reply to your upcoming post, baked right into the composer, which I actually love because it promotes better wording and more thought instead of promoting a festering cesspool of 240-letter character assassinations.

I say ‘generous’ because no, I’ve never seen it, and I never made an effort to exclude single‐use straws from my life; I’m trying to be generous mostly to myself.

‘*seen*’, I’ll generously say, includes seeing it on a screen, provided it’s in a really sobering, clear way (some video from hand‐held devices has a... ‘feel’ to it that I haven’t seen replicated yet).

Convenience; if I had to name one other thing, the one thing that perfectly encapsulates the problem is abstraction of consequences. Sure your straw could choke a marine life‐form – even a really really cute one – but have you ever actually *seen* it?

And with it all the other thoughtless lazy attempts at ‘x name but I changed it to be performative about my disrespect of x name’. Good God that’s getting old.
