I never subscribed to the idea that those born pre modern era might have had no sense of selfhood. Then historians show us their teeth and having had some dental pain I am convinced that before access to analgesics it probably was possible to experience life without a sense of individual identity.

According to Descarte the thing that bridges the material and immaterial worlds is the Pineal Gland. So you can definitely headbutt a ghost but only a small part of your head will hit it.
