that's also kind of a one-time or few-time use for people right? you use it to create the feed server but then once it's created it doesn't use an LLM during normal operations?

local models where the user pays for the compute aren't good enough yet, and remote models that *are* good require the provider to pay out the ass for compute. if it's free, that means the provider is choosing an extremely low power model and/or has byzantine caching that nukes effectiveness

just from an economics standpoint I feel pretty confident saying that as of 2026, if an AI integration product is free it's almost *certainly* useless garbage, even if you're the type of person who *wants* to use AI for something

the usage tracking systems do take into account different costs per token due to context window size I *think*, but it's difficult to get a good sense of how the accounting works from an individual user plan - claude has admin tools for checking but only for the business plans currently

exactly that yeah

the token counts, limits, and tracking are less to budget how expensive your usage of the API is and more to help you keep track of how close you're getting to the point where the model becomes an idiot because its context window is overwhelming it

yes

so one of the weird parts is that the cost of computing the core attention algorithm for the Nth token increases as N gets larger. tokens take more work to generate as the context window fills up.

yeah it doesn't really work like that

tbh the thing I dislike the most about atproto is its association with social media
I do not want more social media and find it to be the most stressful thing on the planet but people keep making bluesky again anyway
And I really think this has to do more with the protocol history than its design

ok I admit it, that's pretty damn cool

no, I do not want to take the joyous moment of my day where I felt happy about my body and wardrobe and decided to take a picture of it... and then hide it by default with "CW: eye contact"

I will simply not be present in a community that expects that of me

It's been turning me crazy seeing how far the data center heat island paper, which hasn't been peer reviewed, has made it in the media, with every headline implying it's the air that's warming. A stupid lie spreading fast in real time. blog.andymasley.com/p/data-cente...

you look like children and fools and even when I agree with the moral grounds of your takes I'm embarrassed to be associated with your buffoonery

I miss the days when terminally online software engineers hating how tech worked usually involved them having at least a semi-accurate understanding of it

I think it wouldn't work with bluesky posts because I'm preeeeetty sure they include CID refs to the posts they quote or reply to?

yeah I really liked them when I first read about them, they seemed like the appropriate kind of clever

SCREAMING THIS FROM THE FUCKING ROOFTOPS

that fucking rules lol

also, don't atproto record TIDs use basically the same scheme as snowflakes? I vaguely remember reading that the TID generation spec was derived from snowflakes

I have immense respect for the Bluesky staff because they have a great vision for what the future of social media and software development should look like and have to put up with so much shit from the userbase for it
