Yikes… I often wonder did people just get inured to grief or did they feel every loss as hard as we do even though tragic deaths were so much more common. Both possibilities are are hard to imagine.
From our vantage the people of the 1920s having lots of children seems sort of heroic given their difficult material circumstances, but I suppose if your grandparents lived through the Famine you might think you’re the lucky ones living in modern luxury
