The Public Scholar publishes one week from today. Please consider pre-ordering and/or asking your library to order. Authors really need your pre-orders to make a book go.
I think it's a useful book! More importantly, so do real scholars and writers!

Article doesn't quite get some pronouns correct but it's interesting, she confessed with enough of a backstory to be believable

I feel like a broken record. It would also be GREAT for a city's finances that are struggling. Homes on Milwaukee Ave are double the value of nearby homes. Instead of a new income tax, we could just pedestrianize a bunch of residential streets and make the taxes back from the value gains.
I love this idea. Feels like one of things that would take off after just one or two places implemented it.
It wouldn't be hard and it would make our neighborhoods so much better.
Yes, please!
Someone was taken near 20th & Central tonight at 10 PM. Within 5 minutes, there were over 20 people on a call and even more people on foot in the area to respond.
And we have the local example of Milwaukee Avenue, a case study in how much people enjoy carless streets. We could just...do that more. Not even trying feels like a real failure of imagination more than anything else.
I realize it's much easier said than done but let's say that in every neighborhood, you closed 10 one-block stretches to cars during the summer. They would instantly become local hotspots for kids to play and families to hang out, etc.
I think a lot about how we could just close like 20-30% of Minneapolis residential streets to cars, or make them annoying to drive on (e.g. much narrower) and it would barely impact commute times/convenience for most people while significantly improving their quality of life
A note about the recipe up top: We were unexpectedly out of veal so I substituted lamprey caught fresh in the local river (Mississippi). Only took six hours of boiling to get the texture right, and while that was happening, I popped over to the market for a few pounds of truffles for the garnish.

VEAL ROULADES FILLED WITH PARSLEY BUTTER T S Kalvkyckling (Sweden) The name of this dish in Swedish translates to 'veal-chicken'. I have tried to figure out why, but not succeeded. This veal-chicken is a roulade of veal, filled with Parsley Butter (page 655) before being braised tender and served with cream sauce. These roulades are often served with Boiled Potatoes (page 117) and Quick Pickled Cucumber (page 658). Sometimes a jar of Blackcurrant Jelly (page 691) or Rowanberry Jelly (page 691) can also accompany the dish. Preparation and cooking time: 1 hour Serves: 4 1 kg/24 lb topside of veal, boned, cut into 12-14 even slices, pounded flat I quantity Parsley Butter (page 655) 200 ml/7 fl oz (¼ cup plus 1 tablespoon) Veal Stock (page 650) 70 g/24 oz (5 tablespoons) butter, plus extra for browning I quantity Basic Cream Sauce (page 663), made from the veal cooking liquid salt and white pepper, to taste

I went to Fallingwater, and the thing that surprised me most was the visitors center, a group of lovely wood and concrete pavilions from the 1970s. The designer was Paul Mayén, life partner of Edgar Kaufmann Jr., whose parents commissioned the house. More here: fallingwater.org/a-spirited-a...
Never been there but maybe another time!
right?? i love it all so much. good work to everyone involved. and the reporter hit all the right notes, too.
I baked cookies a few times there but also appreciated the rule that nothing leaves the house—you leave the extra cookies there and anyone can come eat some at any hour. Definitely did that on some nights when I needed a break.
It's in the vicinity of Minneapolis. You have to find the right people to get directions, and then cross the border at a specific time. Complicated process.
