Two hooded figures with lamps approach a moonlit, isolated cottage.
A woman answers the door.
We have come for the child, says the hooded figure
So soon? she asks
It is time, says the hooded figure.
The woman is distraught. We should never have got him a library card!
What is done cannot be undone, says the hooded figure
We couldn’t see the harm! We just wanted him to enjoy reading!
For most, it ends there, says the hooded figure, turning away and walking into the wilderness
Oh lord, What have I done! says the woman,
the child walks past her and out into the darkness with them.
Do not cry mother.
I am a writer now.

Thank you Caroline ☺️ It's for a mini zine I made to hand out (instead of business cards) at Camosun's Comic and Art Festival yesterday. It was a lot of fun to make.

An illustration of a Sasquatch-like figure standing with a painted forest behind him or her. Their mouth is open revealing sharp fangs. Their hands are up as if they are about to grab the viewer. Their eyes look fierce.

Since time immemorial, Indigenous people in BC have had stories of humanlike giants & little people covered in fur

Many are called Sasquatch now, a Salish name that includes modern accounts of a forest being some believe is real

Congrats to our colleague @sheebellax2.bsky.social! Her story “A Gift at the Doorstep” is in The Kindread Coast anthology and pays homage to her Heiltsuk heritage, the Coast Salish land where she gratefully lives, and the shapeshifters who slink between our world and the spirit side.

It is pretty cool! (the moon, of course, and the art)

When I was looking for new moon folklore I kept seeing things from Ireland. But wanted to share some lesser known North American practices 🌝

An illustration of the man in the moon with his eyes closed. Clouds are below him and mist swirls around him. A crown or 3D wheel hovers above him in the air with astrological signs on it. The word “mond” is at the bottom, which is moon in German.

Since time immemorial, the new moon has represented new cycles. Traditionally, it was for invocation, planting and building.

In East Canada, the third day was for pruning trees. In North Carolina, it was bad luck to see the new moon first through tree branches #FolkloreThursday

Illustration of Sleeping Beauty lying on a bed asleep in a castle-like room with a boy (possibly a dwarf with no beard) with a feather in his hat seated nearby, but also asleep as if he has nodded off. The image also has a lot of bright coloured flowers.

It might be worth reaching out to Massy Books. Writers might also need a bit more info about the game and pay. Sounds like a cool concept ☺️

I'll pass this on. We have approached writers and made offers in the past. There has been an extra relationship component. Rekla created a beautiful comic for us. Other Indigenous creators have not been Coast Salish or prefer not to identify. A haunting writer whose work I love is from Bella Bella.

A scary dragon-like monster (called the Leviathan) swims on the surface of the water with water bubbling around it. Its eyes look evil and angry and its mouth is open showing a lot of sharp teeth. There is a very small amount of sky at the top of the image, showing a horizon that is far away.

According to older mid European folklore, if your lamp goes out on Christmas morning you will see spirits. And if you burn elder on Christmas Eve you will see witches #FolkloreThursday

Screenshot of a tarot spread by Polish Folk Witch on YouTube exploring her fear of the Bent-Neck Lady ghost seen on Haunting of Hill House season 2 (loosely based on Turn of the Screw by Henry James). The graphic is in black and red with a white title. There are spots for six cards to be laid out. A red snake can be seen behind the text list of questions whose numbers correspond with each card. A painting shows realistic figures, a man and a woman, sitting across from each other at a small table. There is nothing in the background though a large red circle acts as a frame. The woman has her head thrown back and the man stares intently at her with a smile on his face. Both of their hands are on a Ouija board.
