Earning either an MD or a PhD is an impressive accomplishment on its own, but what about those who tackled both? Today, we’re thrilled to spotlight Stanford anesthesiologist Dr. Goodnough and hear her story about the path in the clinical and research fields.

We explored the role of TRPV1 in remote cardioprotection.

When you inhibit TRPV1, you lose endogenous protection that occurs from injury such as an abdominal incision.

Ever wonder what receptor is responsible for the hot sensation after you eat a hot pepper? It’s a nociceptor called TRPV1

This week, we’re spicing things up and talking about Gross Lab research about TRPV1.

Alcohol intolerance, also called ALDH2 deficiency, is a genetic condition that makes it hard for some people to break down a chemical from alcohol called acetaldehyde.
⚠️Build up of acetaldehyde could lead to long-term health risks!!!

In ancient China, surgeon Hua Tuo (c. 140–208 AD) used “mafeisan”—herbal extracts + alcohol—to induce unconsciousness for major surgeries. Early anesthesia innovation! 🥼🌿

When you drink alcohol, it boosts GABA (a calming brain chemical) and blocks glutamate (which stimulates brain activity). This combination of more calming signals and fewer stimulating signals is why alcohol can temporarily reduce pain.

Howard Haggard once asked, “What is alcohol doing in the organism?” 🍸 Though already explored as an anesthetic in the 1930s, no modern drugs come from its class. Our lab studies alcohol metabolism via ALDH2 to find new paths in anesthesia & pain relief.#standfordanesthesia

The FDA fired its tobacco enforcers. Now it wants them back. The agency asked laid-off workers to return after gutting the office that penalizes stores for selling tobacco to minors.

The FDA is asking laid-off employees to temporarily return after mass cuts decimated the agency’s ability to penalize stores that sell cigarettes and vapes to minors.

An eppendorf centrifuge in that specific nicotine-yellow color from the 80s. It's the exact color as the old fridge in your garage that you keep sodas in that your parents replaced in 1997, and which has outlived a half-dozen of its replacements.

"Why don't you buy a new centrifuge"

Because everyone knows that any appliances in that shade of yellow will outlive you and your entire family, look at it

Building Blocks Of Life Found On Asteroid Bennu Early analysis of asteroid samples from NASA’s OSIRIS-REx mission show the residue of an icy brine, and a soup of amino acids.

Researchers found 14 of the 20 amino acids essential for life on Earth in samples from the ancient asteroid Bennu.

Dr. Danny Glavin and Dr. Dante Lauretta join us to discuss the samples and what they mean for the search for life beyond Earth.

Genetics is important! Carriers of a variant in the alcohol metabolism pathway known as ALDH2*2 causes an accumulation of acetaldehyde which is a known carcinogen. Risk of cancer is higher for carriers of this variant. #dryjanuary #alcohol #Aldh2

As part of #dryjanuary ,
it is important to know that the metabolite of alcohol, acetaldehyde, is a class one carcinogen. If you are alcohol intolerant, you will accumulate acetaldehyde, that over time can cause DNA damage that can lead to cancer. #alcohol #genetics #Aldh2

Important article about the health risks of drinking alcohol in the post today! Particularly important for people who flush after they drink alcohol as they cannot break down the carcinogen in alcohol acetaldehyde. #dryjanuary #alcohol
