You found this. Good!

I wonโ€™t explain where I am, or ask you to look for me. I think youโ€™ll understand that some endings are meant to be quiet.

Today, I shared with patrons the Diplomat's Land. Figuring an end to the game, a sense that everything you have found or accomplished is leading you somewhere, is a great inquiry for us.

The Games of London Film Festival got me thinking: what do we call these games? game reviews & how the medium has outgrown our language for it

I think games are evolving faster than the language we have for it.

Partly review of the games featured at London Film Festival, and partly my reflection as a developer/player of games that will move me.

Huizinga argued in Homo Ludens that the very foundations of law, art, and ritual emerge from playful acts, where rules and imagination combine to shape meaning. To him, play wasnโ€™t a distraction from culture, but the generative force at its core.

resistance in video games how true stories transform survival into resistance

I loved writing this piece. It let me dive into the psychological difference between survival (instinctual) and resistance (choice). I look at some games and how they evoke the feeling of resistance in players.

Resistance differs from survival because it is conscious, not instinctual. You are not reacting to survive, you are choosing to push back. It often goes beyond ourselves, into the collective. If survival is driven by fear, resistance is driven by meaning.

I want the game to feel like a road trip through the Arctic, but also like flipping through the scrapbook of someone who collected every fragment they could. Some elements literally pop up.

Writing (as) the Diplomat How do you make a distant, complex story feel relevant and interesting?

Given that 'Race for the Arctic' relies heavily on a narrative that resonates with players, I examine how we are creating different entry points into the story based on the unique needs of various players.

The โ€œAstronomy Levelโ€ in our indie game Race for the Arctic is created in collaboration with a scientist from Eureka Weather Station, one of the northern most research bases on Earth. The notice board in the game is designed by him!

Yess, inspired by a real portrait. This is the original work of our Art Director, just for one character. We might bring a character artist to draw all the characters :)

Participatory Design: How we co-create characters Designing with, not just about the people who live and work in the Arctic

One of the most unique features of our game is that all characters are based on real people who live & work in the Arctic. In this post, I share how we apply Participatory Design to bring their stories to life.
