oh man you should look into making a damp box! life saver! i usually pull my handles and let them dry a bit while i trim the leather hard thrown bodies, form the handles into shape and then attach them when they're about to the same hardness as mug body. i use a heat gun occasionally to help.

mugs are hard! i've been forcing myself to get better at them 😅 there's so many steps that are crucial to complete depending where the clay is in its drying stage
