Yesterday I returned from a 5-day Plum Village retreat at Stirling University. I met so many lovely people including six very joyful monastics. Even though I had a toothache throughout the retreat, I was able to enjoy practicing with new friends, and received the Five Mindfulness Trainings.

Black cat lies next to a maroon meditation cushion on top of matching meditation mat. Behind the cat is a small yellow side table with a meditation bell, some gemstones, a statue of Jizo, a framed painting of the Great Buddha at Kamakura by Kawase Hasui, a paper crane, a wooden sunflower, and a gold metal card with Kannon on it. On the bottom shelf of the side table is a stripy blue and green blanket and some meditation mala beads. The side table is on top of a multicoloured rug. To the left of the table is a bonsai in a terrarium, and a plug socket with wires lying around. On the wall behind the table is a gatha by Thich Nhat Hanh that says ‘listen listen, this wonderful sound brings me back to my true home’ and a large wall hanging of the tarot card The Star.

Picture of a Tapered Drone Fly: Eristalis pertinax is a European hoverfly. Like Eristalis tenax, the larva of E. pertinax is a rat-tailed maggot and lives in drainage ditches, pools around manure piles, sewage, and similar places containing water badly polluted with organic matter.
I saw this fly looking tired in my office, so I fed it sugar water. I thought it was a bee, but it turned out to be a tapered drone fly, whose larva lives in sewage. I briefly felt regret and disgust for helping it, but then realised it’s good practice of non-discrimination. 🦟 no mud no lotus.
If you are in the Edinburgh area, please come along to one or both of these special events with six monastics from Plum Village. Explore how mindfulness can help us find joy and stability amidst uncertainty, and stay connected to ourselves and others. 🪷
Word of the Day is ‘uhtcearu’ [ucht-kay-aru, with the 'ch' as in the Scottish ‘loch']:
Old English for ‘the sorrow before dawn', when you lie awake in the darkness and worries crowd your mind.
