I've been rereading this reply to Glitch and it's so beautiful. Sorry A24, there's only been two indie movies.
As with a lot of things, I blame DnD for making this way more permissible than it should be because reading the three core rulebooks is a slog there 95% of the info isn't relevant.
I'll say there's an exception for some one-shots and such, but if you're playing the game you probably should have read through the rulebook(s) at least once. The GM shouldn't have to be the only one who knows the rules.
If you're playing the game, you need to read the book.
