How can games academia and designers collaborate to push the field forward?

When the field is meaningfully pushed forward, the current promiscuous/porous/bureaucratic people and systems will be forced to adapt or be left behind.

Games academia, like the games industry, is made of people. Some of them pay more attention to the furthering of design, some pay more attention to their doctrines.

The same can be said of designers.

The quest becomes "how do we amplify the good?"

Investors aren't invested like employees and players are. Shareholders don't care about games or the industry. Layoffs, stock buybacks, pump and dump for short term gains.

But good games are a long term play. Building a strong dev team and player base are optimal strategies.

Occasional reminder that there’s no, “it’s too late, its over” for anthropogenic climate change. Every molecule of CO2 that doesn’t go into the atmosphere makes a difference. Preventing 0.1 degree of warming makes a difference. Every bit of climate resilience we build together makes a difference.

I think you hit the nail on the head with "the system as it stands"

I don't think it's that the system sees queer as bad. The system is designed to demonize differences to make people angry at each other instead of the system.

I think if there's one single thing I could hammer into any indie dev's brain it's that video games are art but games studios are business, and so you need to think long and hard about who you want to involve in the business of your art.
