The “Myth [Lie] of the Big Bad Megacity.”
“What the far right feels about cities isn’t physical fear. It’s discomfort. Canadian urban planner @brenttoderian.bsky.social decodes this feeling as: “I’m not the majority any more, it isn’t my city anymore.” @simonkuper.bsky.social in @financialtimes.com
This is important — London Mayor calls out “The Outrage Economy!”
@sadiqkhanlondon.bsky.social is calling for “significantly stronger action against social media companies that spread disinformation after a study showed a surge in hostile accounts posting falsehoods about London’s crime rates…”
"My experience of driving less has reminded me that when we can, it’s worth questioning our habits and resisting the instinct to do what is most comfortable – because what’s comfortable doesn’t necessarily make us feel happy or free." www.irishtimes.com/life-style/p...
“The effort to quiet Paris complements the wider campaign to make Paris greener, cleaner & less car-dependent, which include vehicle restrictions in the center, crackdowns on polluting vehicles, & an ambitious expansion of bike networks. Those have cut the city’s average noise level by 2 decibels.”
Suburban road with no sidewalks
Nothing makes you feel welcome in the suburbs as a pedestrian like having no sidewalks.
“Copenhagen reported that 62% of its residents are now commuting to work or school by bike — an increase from 52% in 2015 & 36% in 2012, when the City Council launched a 14-year-plan to improve the quality, safety & comfort of cycling.”
#Copenhagen chose. They keep choosing even better every year.
“You’re not supposed to use your phone while driving.”
“Got it. Let’s install large tablet touchscreens in almost every single new car.”

“Car brain” is real. Drivers in heavy vehicles very often overestimate their control and underestimate risks to others. Roads are full of vulnerable users - cyclists, pedestrians, and when drivers assume they’re always in charge, crashes, or worse, happen. Awareness and responsibility save lives.

Consider the infrastructure v enforcement debate settled.
Car culture is a problem of public space. There is no policing your way to results as impressive as this.
He's still getting his hair done.
2-0-1 and Laine stays in LA with the Kings.
You asked during the livestream on Saturday if a coach has ever been fired before the trade deadline... looks like LA has found the courage to do so. Maybe MLSE will also find the same level of commitment to their fans? (wishful thinking for Leafs fan, to be sure...)
“Helsinki hasn’t registered a single traffic-related fatality in the past year…Citing data that shows the risk of pedestrian fatality is cut in half by reducing a car’s speed from 40 to 30km/hr, city officials imposed the lower limit in most of Helsinki’s residential areas and city center in 2021.”

ReJoule’s second-life electric vehicle battery energy storage system gives used batteries a powerful second act that outlasts many new utility-scale storage systems.

Building supportive housing for those who would otherwise be homeless is the right moral thing to do. It’s also the right financial thing to do, since it actually saves public money. It’s a no brainer, so don’t let wrong-headed ideology get in the way.
Tell your leaders to build supportive housing.
Two vehicles stopped in traffic, photographed from behind. The vehicle on the left is a silver Ford F-250 and the one on the right is a blue Ford Festiva.
These two vehicles were carrying the same number of people (one).
What’s the opposite of artificial intelligence? Genuine stupidity I suppose. Plenty of that around too.

The station was designed by the Spanish architect and engineer Santiago Calatrava, who is famous for his futuristic, skeletal structures (he also designed the Oculus in NYC).
GOOD NEWS: The world’s largest steam-producing heat pump is now online in Finland, delivering 12 MW of superheated steam from waste heat and CO₂-free electricity.
Proof that industrial heat can be electrified at scale.

“It's not my duty as Mayor to make sure you have a parking spot. For me it's the same as if you bought a cow, or a refrigerator, and then asked me where you're going to put them.” — Mayor of Pontevedra, Spain (re-elected 6 times)
The first exhibition of the ex-CIVA is planned for 28.11.2026 and appears to be an examination of 'Brusselization' from the point of view of everybody involved.

“We shouldn’t be aiming to nudge a few % points in public opinion. Our goal should be to make freedom of mobility so compelling that people demand it. Help people visualize & demand a future where kids can bike to school, seniors can walk to stores, couples can bike to dinner.” @usa.streetsblog.org
Paris multimodal street
Paris goals
Paris goals.
Paris “school street”
IMPORTANT: Paris has more than “vision.” They have clear plans. Including a 5-Year Pedestrian Plan:
- 300 million € invested by 2026
- 100 new hectares of ped space
- 100 more “streets for kids”
- Focus on 0 pedestrian deaths #VisionZero
- Longer ped cross times
Does your city follow smart plans?
Drawing of a busy terraced street has pavement-parked cars down both sides. A long cane user is trying to get down the left pavement. A driver in a pavement-parked SUV on double yellow lines is shouting "I need to park here! You can squeeze through or go on the road!" A powerchair user is driving down the road, while an adult and child on a side-by-side tandem are cycling towards us. A driver coming up the road is shouting "Get off the road! You'll get yourselves killed!" A child on a small bike is riding down the right hand pavement, while a driver in a pavement-parked van shouts "Get off the pavement! You're a danger to pedestrians!"
It's great to see action starting against dangerous pavement parking. Now we need: A clear definition of what "unreasonable obstruction" means; Effective ways to enforce against obstructive and dangerous parking; Enforcement against pavements being broken by heavy vehicles.
