When will Canada join the digital sovereignty movement?! The time is now to reduce our reliance on US tech imperialism ✊

Great article by @nolore.bsky.social this morning
Couldn’t have said it better myself!

“This is why data centers are such massive consumers of water. Because only one of the loops is closed. The other is in a constant battle to cool massive amounts of super hot GPUs and is evaporating millions of gallons of water a day…”

CBC once again shits the bed on the headline & buries the lede.
Zero fact checking and just regurgitating the company’s press release. A+ journalism over there guys

I went to the open house hosted by the operator where they claimed 210 jobs would be created and I’m sure even this is a gross exaggeration.
Did you know that the federal gov’t itself commissioned a consultation on surveillance pricing and found experts overwhelming find it to be anticompetitive and predatory?
If we had actual journalism in this country they would be reporting on this!

I desperately need all the details on this, immediately.
You know what would really help?? Building a giant data centre in our backyard. What could possibly go wrong? #lorneville #datacentre

Last week, @policyalternatives.ca put together an urgent call for Canada to tax the profits that the oil and gas industry is making off the war in Iran. Yesterday, the best Carney could do was removing tax on average people, further defunding the state.

How exciting!! I hope he announces a new time-bound means-tested tax credit for large corporations that might theoretically trickle down some economic benefits someday

PHOTO BY BARBARA SIMPSON/BRUNSWICK NEWS The Holt Liberal government is expected to deliver this spring its long-awaited plan to overhaul the province's property tax and assessment systems.
Anyone want to take bets on what this long awaited tax reform will include?
But make no mistake, it’s also a bandaid: if hospitals have retention issues and chronic understaffing, no amount of “travel nurses” will plug that leak. It’s not a substitute for solving systemic failures.
I think this is brilliant, especially if these nurses are still getting benefits/pension, etc. Keeps healthcare staff in the public system & allows staffing to be allocated where needed.
The digital sovereignty revolution has officially begun!!!
Once this Pandora’s box is opened, there’s no closing it.

Well, this isn't good news at all. Might be time to rescind all those sweetheart property tax deals with the Irvings. #nbpoli #debt

Please tell me all your secrets 😭
My family’s car currently runs just fine but we currently have to pay more than the value of the car itself in repairs within the next few weeks or we won’t be able to legally drive it.
This is just not sustainable, and it’s a drag on the economy for those who can least afford it
And many of these repairs ARE unnecessary & overpriced. In my family we have personally experienced going to multiple mechanics with the same car and receiving two DIFFERENT lists of required repairs. People are getting fleeced and they have no recourse except to pay.
@susanholtnb.bsky.social are there any current plans to scrap the car safety (MVI) program in NB?
During a cost of living crisis, people cannot afford unnecessary repairs to cars

I’ve read almost all his books, fiction & nonfiction!
Currently reading it! We love Cory Doctorow in this house
“It digs into this massive data center boom we’ve been seeing in recent years, what’s driving it, and what the wider effects have been on communities and beyond”
Can’t wait to buy a copy for every single one of my city councillors who unanimously voted for the Spruce Lake data centre in Lorneville!
There isn’t a single person currently registered that I’d be interested in voting for in the upcoming municipal election. Not a single one, in my ward or any other.

Screenshot from email newsletter from CHARTER CHALLENGE FOR FAIR VOTING Text reads: I Supreme Court Declines to Hear Our Appeal in the Charter Challenge for Fair Voting Dear Supreme Court Declines to Hear Charter Challenge Appeal Today, we learned that the Supreme Court of Canada declined to hear our appeal in the Charter Challenge for Fair Voting (they considered 19 requests and granted one). While this news is both frustrating and deeply disappointing, it is not the end of our fight for a democracy that truly represents all Canadians. Unfortunately, the Supreme Court does not provide reasons to explain why they decide to hear appeals or not, so we don't know why they deemed this case, in which we called on the court to carefully evaluate whether our national First-Past-the-Post (FPTP) electoral system complies with the Canadian Charter of Rights and Freedoms, not to meet the bar of "being of national or public importance". As puzzling as we find this decision, it unfortunately closes off, at least for now, the possibility that courts will recognize our right to be represented by an MP for whom we have voted. Instead, the courts have accepted the narrow view that our right to vote is satisfied as long as we have the opportunity to cast a vote and have it counted, regardless of whether that vote is reflected in the composition of Parliament. Sad day for democracy in Canada: the Supreme Court has declined to hear @charterchallenge.bsky.social case for proportional representation in Canada.

I haven’t decided what I think of @avilewis.ca in general, but he’s right on Canada Post being treated as a public service rather than a profit business. This is also true of other public services like national rail transportation and urban public transit.
ALL politicians need to get this right.
