Happy to be a #laCaixaFoundation Fellow @lacaixa.bsky.social for the second time! After 15 years since I left Catalonia! Ten years ago La Caixa supported my PhD, which took me on an exciting journey around the world. Now, you bring me back home to @icmcsic.bsky.social. Thank you, thank you!

Diagram representing the frequency in the combination of i) conservation objectives of the potential OECMs, ii) the OECMs sector and iii) the realm. We see that most potential OECMs have conservation as a primary objective and come from the environmental sector. More than half of the potential OECMs refer to terrestrial ecosystems.

New review on OECMs by @dpetza.bsky.social et al, emphasising the need for standardised assessment methods, improved decision-support tools, and socio-cultural integration to enhance OECM recognition under the 30 × 30 conservation target link.springer.com/article/10.1... @skatsanevakis.bsky.social

I love Mexico's Kelp forests, because in them, there is an amazing community of fishers, NGOs, academics, & people. They are tough but kind, threatened but resilient. Just like the Baja California dessert, a magic underwater forest exists where collaboration is key for adaptation. Thank you again!

4/5 After a decade of the establishment of an MPA network in California we learn for the first time that trophic cascades in MPAs enhance climate resilience. Preserving intact food webs matters, but takes time and requires large scale protection.

Long term monitoring is essential.

3/5 MPAs support recovery of fished urchin predators (California sheephead & spiny lobster) in southern California, limiting urchin abundances and preventing overgrazing of kelps in MPAs. Central California has no urchin predators fished that benefit from MPAs.

2/5 Using decades of remote sensing #LterSbc
& underwater surveys #PiscoScience we found that a network of 58 temperate coastal MPAs provided resistance to and recovery from the 2014-2016 #marineheatwaves for kelp forests in Southern California, but not in Central California.

‘Blob’ heat wave killed millions of seabirds—and they haven’t bounced back Historic 2016 event may have permanently altered northern Pacific ecosystem

Marine heat wave confirmed cause of death for 4 million birds (Common Murres) in 2016. Half of Alaska’s Common Murre population at the time. Largest documented animal die-off in modern history.

As little as 2C temp increase drastically their altered food chain.

Protect kelp forests

First post!

New Letter. Kelp forests support biodiversity & livelihoods along 30% of the coasts. However, ~3% are fully protected despite being highly threatened.

We call for nations to protect 30% of their kelp by 2030.
