Local reporter’s coverage led to Rick Steves’ purchase of hygiene center PBS host learned of the center serving the unhoused – and that it was closing - from MyLynnwoodNews.

Shoutout to Cascade PBS for highlighting my coverage about a local hygiene center and how it led to Rick Steves, a European travel guide and philanthropist, to purchase it so the center can continue helping people experiencing homelessness and housing insecurity.

Hi Bluesky! Long time, no see. Thought I’d come on here and share my latest.

I’ve been examining long COVID in Latino farmworkers for the last few months — some of who continue to deal with symptoms post diagnosis and ongoing hospital bills.

Wait, that’s not Rick Steves! We went down the ‘pink slime’ rabbit hole - My Edmonds News In December, My Neighborhood News Group reporter Angelica Relente wrote about Edmonds-based travel guide and philanthropist Rick Steves and his purchase of the Lynnwood Hygiene Center building. Relent...

Beware of "pink slime" media. @a-rlnt.bsky.social covered the story about @ricksteves.bsky.social last month, & this story about "Rick Steves" came up. Many readers pointed out that is NOT Rick nor is that building the hygiene center.

Story by Jamie Holter.

A screen shot from The Seattle Times says:

Steves was in Phoenix on Nov. 10 when he checked a hometown news blog and felt his eye catch on a story about the center's impending closure. He recognized the building, where he remembered taking his car to get its emissions checked.

Steves, who didn't know what a hygiene center was before last month, called his purchase "the most beautiful Christmas present (he) could have."

A center for homeless residents was set to close. Then Rick Steves stepped in. Travel writer Rick Steves said he takes the verse ‘love thy neighbor’ seriously and paid more than $2 million to save the facility in Washington state.

Thank you @washingtonpost.com & @bellwak.bsky.social for giving us credit to the Lynnwood hygiene center story. Love the butterfly effect in journalism & love this quote.

“I really take ‘love your neighbor’ seriously,” Rick Steves said to The Washington Post.
