Weißt Du, was bequem ist, Friedrich?

Would you mind summarizing for us non-Oberlin-types? (I can think of some reasons, but I don't know what the Oberlin angle is here)

Almost everything we argue about is a substitute for the thing we should be arguing about: the immense wealth & power of an oligarchic class, which captures governments, ruins lives and wrecks the living planet.
This class redirects our rage at scapegoats. To resist its lies is to resist its power.

And a great -great-great Granny is listed as having had 14 children born alive of which 8 were living. Modern medicine, man.

Going through Irish census records and in the 1911 census, my great-great grandmother is listed as having 12 children born alive and 9 living. Those are the times certain Republicans would like to have us return to, women constantly pregnant and their unvaccinated children dying

Found my family, great-great-granny only Irish speaking (and illiterate), then great-grandparents bilingual and literate. My grandmother was a native Irish speaker but didn't pass it on. A mix of happy developments (I have a PhD, 100 years after illiteracy) and rather sad – heritage language lost

This will sound ridiculous, given that the vice president is a Catholic convert, but there is a long history of anti-Catholic feeling in the US and I can't help seeing a lot of what's happened recently in that light

As someone born Catholic, I feel fine about disagreeing with papal infallibility. But he *chose* this! There were all kinds of Protestant denominations right there! Why become a Catholic if you aren't actually 100% on board?

Yes, I do understand that (Irish grandparents went to UK/US, so I'm a bit removed from the full Irish Catholic experience, but I got a decent dose all the same!). I'm not saying I'd go back to the Church – but I do appreciate the last two popes being a sort of counterweight to Trumpism/capitalism

...& although the Church very often does not live by its own supposed values, in the current age of extreme capitalism I find myself thinking more and more that it's meaningful to have an institution that at least proclaims the value of kindness to the poor, sick etc. So I'm increasingly muddled!

Someone skimped on their research there!
I'm also a (sometimes wobbly) atheist but since Francis and Leo have felt a bit milder towards the Church & also started to appreciate more the role it can play in creating community/allowing people to get to know others outside of their usual bubbles...

(Turns out there is more to Catholicism than fancy rituals and misogyny, which I'm guessing are the things that drew him in)

As someone who was born Catholic, I feel totally fine in saying that I think papal infallibility is nonsense, but I find it ridiculous for a convert to question the pope on theology. You chose this! You knew what you were getting into, get fully on board or don't get on board at all.

Facebook recently asked me if I want more or less personalized ads, and I said less, OBVIOUSLY, and now I get compulsory "ad breaks" where a video plays and they are unironically great because they remind me to get off Facebook

NYT headline reads: "Trump’s Signature to Be Added to U.S. Dollars
President Trump is set to be the first sitting president to have his signature appear on America’s currency."
The year is 2030. I now own a home in every walkable US neighborhood, which I've paid for by selling rubber stamps that say "refused to release the Epstein files"
