Would this be worth studying? Absolutely — and it could reframe attachment theory entirely.
It would test whether attachment requires exclusivity. It would help distinguish “exclusivity” from “stability”. It would explore whether multiple romantic partners impact the caregiving system.
Does attachment research ever consider non-monogamous families?
Right now: almost none.
What we do have is research on same-sex parents, blended families, communal child-rearing, alloparenting, & polyamorous relationships (but NOT their children).
Attachment Theory is rooted in monogamous, western, nuclear-family assumptions. Attachment research developed in mid-20th century, western contexts, assumed heterosexual, dyadic, monogamous parental units & built on the idea of one or two primary caregivers forming the “attachment system”
