Why were these two US immigration judges fired? | Seth Stern The case of two fired judges – and one who kept his job – offers a lesson in the administration’s view of free speech

The DOJ is making immigration judges choose between the First Amendment and their jobs.

What was once a fringe legal theory cooked up by Texas police to muzzle a local reporter is now being mirrored by the Trump administration to chip away at constitutional protections for basic journalistic practices.

You’ve heard about the Don Lemon arrest, but have you seen the stories of the dozens of *other* journalists who’ve had their rights violated by ICE?

“What we have seen out of Minnesota — just in the last month — is shocking.”

DHS Secretary says filming ICE is illegal and amounts to doxxing.

They’re absolutely wrong.

Recording law enforcement in public spaces is protected by the First Amendment — and courts have affirmed that right time and again.

It’s journalistic malpractice to let @mayor.lacity.gov Karen Bass exploit @donlemonofficial.bsky.social to pretend she cares about press.

It’s duplicitous and hurts all journalists.

Her own LAPD has committed hundreds of acts of violence against working press.

She’s never said ONE word about it.

The Supreme Court could soon greenlight "geofence" data without a warrant.

That would allow the government to collect reams of location data on everyone, including journalists and whistleblowers.

I've been studying the history of US, and indeed, global policing my whole career and I can't make it more clear to law makers that this isn't a bastardization of policing, it is its purest form and logical conclusion. The impunity, militarization, deference, legitimacy, racial targeting, etc.

🧵 Year 1 of Trump 2.0 has brought a constant barrage of norm-breaking aggressions against the press — from tightened access and investigations to lawsuits — aimed at those who dare to report unfavorably on the administration.

Too many people are trying to differentiate between ICE and police.

I will hold your hand as I say this:

Police in the US treat marginalized people the way ICE treats everyone. They're far more similar than you want to admit.

Defunding the police and abolishing ICE are the same fight.

The Americans Who Saw All This Coming—but Were Ignored and Maligned Call them the Cassandras: the people—mostly not white and male—who smelled the fascism all over Trump from jump street. Why were they “alarmists,” and how did “anti-alarmism” become cool?

those who predicted authoritarianism were both dismissed, & deeply misunderstood, by the media

In the second Trump administration, attacks on journalists are no longer sporadic. They're systematic.

[OPINION] Kenton County’s $50 Lesson in Press Freedom Even after dropping charges, Kenton County can’t undo the damage caused by prosecuting journalists who were simply covering a protest, despite clear legal protections for the press.

The county "drew condemnation from civil liberties advocates across the country, sacrificed any credibility it had when it comes to valuing transparency and respecting First Amendment rights — and all to recover a grand total of $50," writes @seth-stern.bsky.social in @citybeatcincy.bsky.social.

If you’ve read my reporting from Palestine you’ve almost certainly read about the people of Umm al Khair. Last week the Israeli military issued demolition orders that would erase the entire village.

We cannot afford a divided and weak opposition party when an authoritarian is invading our cities, terrorizing our communities, and corruptly self-enriching at the expense of the rest of us.

We want to celebrate a Democratic Party that fights back. But after this latest surrender, the next step is primaries and new leadership. We get the party we demand, and we intend to demand one that fights.
