🧵The flu is everywhere and our hospitals are overwhelmed with viral illness patients.
At the same time, seasonal vaccination rates are declining in Canada.
For The Conversation @amykaler.bsky.social @mmaroto.bsky.social and I wrote about why this is happening and what we need to do differently.

Today @mmaroto.bsky.social @amykaler.bsky.social and I are featured in the @thetyee.ca to discuss the mistake employers are making by mandating workers back to the office.
🧵Doug Ford and major Canadian employers have been busy implementing blanket return-to-office policies that unions oppose. In the @theconversation.com , @mmaroto.bsky.social @amykaler.bsky.social and I show how these policies harm workers and contribute to our multiple ongoing public health crises.
And so great seeing you!

Large clouds currently hang over what we do as sociologists. Even in Canada, we’re dealing with the underfunding of higher education. Things can feel pretty dark sometimes. Thank you, #ASA2025, for reminding me why we do what we do and for the chance to spend time with so many amazing people.
#Vaccination & social trust in #Alberta: new research from @mmaroto.bsky.social @andiewinnipeg.bsky.social & me. #Measles outbreaks make this especially timely. @picardonhealth.bsky.social of interest to your readers?

🧵Why are seasonal childhood vaccination rates falling after the initial stages of the COVID-19 pandemic despite a mass increase of viral illness?
@mmaroto.bsky.social @amykaler.bsky.social and I add some new understanding to this in our new paper published in The Sociological Quarterly

The University of Alberta made the decision to stop funding all university affiliated child care centres.
Dr. @mmaroto.bsky.social and I wrote about the consequences of this decision and how it will not only harm the university, but the Edmonton community.

As Disability in Society section chair, I’m pleased to announce our call for awards! Please submit!
Section on Disability in Society People with Disabilities as a Population with Health Disparities (Co-sponsored by Section on Medical Sociology) The National Institutes of Health (NIH) recently designated people with disabilities as a population with health disparities. This designation is a result of disability advocacy efforts and a step toward recognizing disabled individuals as a minority group with unique health and healthcare concerns. The purpose of this co-sponsored session is to highlight innovative, sociological work that examines health disparities among disabled persons. (Session Organizer) Kenzie Mintus, Indiana University Indianapolis The Future of Work for Disabled Workers In the wake of the COVID-19 pandemic, more Americans are seeking out remote work options. Remote work (or work from home) opportunities are particularly beneficial for disabled workers. However, increasingly large companies are rolling back remote work options. As companies shift their work from home policies, demand for remote work may increase—creating competition from nondisabled workers who benefit from flexible work policies as well. The purpose of this session is to understand how current work policies will shape the future of work for disabled workers. (Session Organizer) Kenzie Mintus, Indiana University Indianapolis Section on Disability in Society Roundtables This roundtable session will explore various topics related to the sociology of disability. Really glad to see @picardonhealth.bsky.social picking up new research by @mmaroto.bsky.social @andiyeg.bsky.social and me. Virus surges aren’t going away, most workplace “sick leave” is inadequate, and women who parent are bearing the brunt of amped-up caregiving demands.
🧵The first paper from our project on viral illness in Alberta has been published.
@mmaroto.bsky.social , @amykaler.bsky.social and I find that for many working parents balancing persistent circulation of sickness is untenable, and many have reached a point of resignation.
