CopterSpotter is community funded, built on open data, and unlike some flight trackers, we don't take payments to remove flights or aircraft from our data. Check it out at CopterSpotter.com

CopterSpotter is now installable as an app from your browser — full screen, no tabs, feels native. Works on iOS, Android, macOS, Windows, and Linux. On desktop, you'll also get automatic notifications when CircleBot flags something or a new event is posted.

We now surface events related to helicopter flights, like police activity through AlertDC or major events hand-posted by our moderators, so you know why the sky just got busy. We also monitor the White House schedule, so you can see when Marine One departures and arrivals are expected.

Meet CircleBot. It automatically detects circling helicopters & flags them on the map. Anyone can add context to a spot: radio calls, news links, info about what is going on, anything useful. Directly inspired by John Wiseman's groundbreaking advisory circular bots (lemonodor.bsky.social)

The map now auto-switches between light and dark mode based on sunrise and sunset, or you can pin it to whichever you prefer. We also added a heatmap layer that shows where flights concentrate across the region.

CopterSpotter HelicoptersofDC's crowd-sourced heli tracking system.

We've been heads-down building for a while: dark mode, heatmaps, circling helicopter detection, installable as an app, and more. Here's a catch-up on what's new on CopterSpotter.com 🧵

Let me know if there is something about the submission flow which has been frustrating, or if you have an idea for how it can be improved.

Spots with information provide more value to the community, so our UX focuses on ways the user can bring more info to spots. For what it’s worth, it is 3x total clicks to report an unknown spot (+ button, get loc button, submit button). That said, we’re always open to suggestions to improve the UX.

sorry link got dropped, there are several other paint jobs, one of which fits you description! Checking the blade count is a good way to rule out part police with their transponder off, as all of these have 3 blades and park police have 2 or 4.

@imagineterrain.bsky.social -- just realizing you might not be checking X anymore, so trying here:
any of these look like the heli you saw today? We've seen a lot of DHS in that area recently. I tentatively added a suspected DHS tag to your spot.

The CopterSpotter Map A visualization of CopterSpotter data from @helicoptersofDC by @SamuelcRees

We see that yeah, nothing we’ve heard about so far. We’re here and on telegram mostly for interaction, and we’re copterspotter.com for submitting spots and browsing our data!
