I'm so happy to finally disclose Fourier Tiler, the software I always wanted to make, so that anyone can experience #Crystallography and #TotalScattering one mesmerizing image at a time!

Self-driving labs are transforming chemistry; but high cost & complexity limit access to a few well-funded labs.
We wanted to change that.
Our new paper in #NatureSynthesis introduces RoboChem-Flex 🧪🤖

A beautiful view of the new Institute for Multiscale Matter and System at sunset, with the description of the job posting: "Fully funded PhD positions available at Ewha Womans University-Institute for Multiscale Matter and Systems, jointly supervised by Prof. Hoi Ri Moon and Prof. Stefano Canossa. Selected candidates will work at the new IMMS institute supported by the National Research Laboratory 2.0 program. Here, they will join an international team in harnessing structural complexity to uncover uncharted territories in the chemistry of porous materials, focussing on one or a combination of the following topics: 1- Design and applications of defect-engineered metal–organic frameworks (MOFs). 2- Development of automated and autonomous laboratories for reticular materials discovery. 3- Design and applications of MOF glasses and complex heterostructures. 4- New total scattering methods based on X-ray and electron crystallography.
The ad continues with some important details on the application requirements and process: "REQUIREMENTS FOR APPLICANTS We welcome applications from female candidates of any origin, having relevant academic education and genuine enthusiasm to join our research vision and lead future innovation in Chemistry and Materials Science. A strong background in one or more of the following is highly desirable: coordination chemistry, solid-state chemistry, or crystallography. Excellent English communication skills, both written and oral, are essential. N.B. Joining the group as MSc intern and connecting MSc and PhD activities is possible. APPLICATION PROCEDURE To apply, please send the documents listed below at s.canossa@ewha.ac.kr using as subject “OT_2026-01”. Please note that, for practical reasons, applications stating different subjects will not be considered. Application documents (in pdf format): (1) One- or two-page CV covering academic education and areas of focus/expertise. (2) One-page letter describing research interests and motivation for joining the group. (3) Recommendation letter from the MSc thesis supervisor (not required for joint MSc-PhD applicants). We look forward to hearing from you! "
Dear friends, I'm delighted to announce open PhD positions at Ewha Womans University!
If you know someone looking for a PhD or a MSc+PhD position, has a passion for the beauty of MOF structures, and doesn't mind the unbelievable nature, food, fun, and cultural marvels of Seoul, feel free to share 🌟
How to make your own robot!
A review of people making awesome lab robots out of commercial 3D printers. Thank you @vsaggiomo.bsky.social and Sander for inviting me to help write this paper in @digital-discovery.rsc.org.

Bonn, what a week! 📍 So glad we got to be part of the #HäKoConference2026 again this year — inspiring talks and amazing science. Already looking forward to next year! 🧪🤝✨ #chemsky
Our group members, Lucas Balzat and Sebastian Bette, joined the 34th annual meeting of the Crystallographic Society in Lübeck 🎉
They presented on phase transitions in lithium-tin based ion conductors and novel nickel-magnesium coordination polymers, investigated with in situ diffraction techniques 🧪
New preprint! We worked with data scientist colleagues on how we can tidy up messy records of MOF syntheses and use them for ML. The keyword is "data model"! @esengulciftci.bsky.social @simonkrause.bsky.social

Hey #chemchat #chemsky question - an app I used to track journal feeds will be dead soon.
Any good tools to keep track of new literature articles? Ideally I'd like something I can 👍👎 and filter out topics or authors (e.g., "exclude this paper mill")
Suggestions welcome - I'll post a summary
Four of our PhD students just organized the Max Planck Science Policy Winter School.🏛️ An entire week which brought together 50 young scientists in Berlin to explore where science can have an impact in the political sphere and how it can shape a more resilient future! 🌍
Congrats to them! 🎉
🚀In solid‑state batteries, size matters!
Check out our study where we show that larger particles lead to faster lithium transport in solid electrolyte sheets!⚡

I just started watching some of the talks from #39c3.

🧵 1/?: Switching a Research Desktop to Linux (Intro & Prehistory)

This is the first in a series of threads/mini-tutorials I'll be posting on switching a real academic research & development desktop to Linux.
Not a “open source rocks” 🧵— this is about doing actual science.

Our PhD student Lucas returned from a trip to Japan🎌🗾
He was a part of a delegation of Junior Experts invited by the Japanese Foreign Ministry to meet with Japanese scientists from academia and industry to discuss how next-generation batteries can help to reach future carbon neutrality 🤩👏
We aim for high-level research, so we decided to put ourselves at the highest altitude in Germany - the Zugspitze! 🏔️❄️☃️
This year's group retreat was fully surrounded by snow, but the confinement effect in the mountain successfully induced our red-hot, strong bonds once again 🤝🤝
#BraggYourPattern in Oslo
@lotschgroup.bsky.social is missing
These are valid points! and if the authors describe it this way everything is fine
Well the bottom one the theoretical pattern based on SXRD data and upper one is the PXRD of the bulk sample
Yes, I often also assume that the rest of the paper is not trustworthy
I am talking about pattern like this
By 'fit' I meant that the reflections are at the right positions and the number of reflections is correct. I do not expect everybody to perform a Pawley fit or a Rietveld refinement.
I have a question for #chemsky and #chemchat: I often see published PXRD patterns which do not fit to the theoretical pattern of a new structure. If the diffraction data don't support the structure, what does that say about the rest of the characterization?
That's true 😅
Surprising to see this in 2025. At minimum, I expected the data to be available upon reasonable request.
I’m excited to join the IUCr Early Career Board for Acta Cryst. A, J. Appl. Cryst., and J. Synchrotron Rad. 💎🌐
Looking forward to learning from and contributing to the crystallography community through meaningful scientific exchange!
