Yee drops out of California governor’s race, doubles down on Porter criticism Former California State Controller Betty Yee, a favorite of Democratic Party insiders who never broke through with the public, is dropping out of the race for governor. Yee announced Monday morning…

Betty Yee is now my favorite politician in CA

I wish she had dropped out sooner, and I wish she’d endorsed, but I’m so glad she dropped out now.

To be able to put aside your own ego for the good of the state is not something anyone else has done this time around. I have huge respect for that

me, fiasco, a fluffy grey tabby, lying on the second level of a cat tree, next to a window. next to me (the space is NOT really large enough for two cats) is a fluffy black cat. we are both looking at the viewer.

Kitten came over to share Fiasco's spot

Big Friend says "Awwwwww" but does not seem to know what DIS LOOK means??? Thought humans were supposed to be the smart ones

(Dis look means "PLS REMOVE KITTEN")

Really tangential but because the whole book stuck with me so vividly: the airplane thriller segment of Joe Hill's "King Sorrow" is the most white-knuckle I have ever been about such things.

And yes there is an airport bar sequence.

This is an extremely obvious and banal point that I have been surprised to find is hard to land with people both-sidesing the AI debate. The highest VC funded companies in tech saying “we want to ruin your lives” as marketing copy > any flavor of online poster anti-Ai hyperbole you can find.

I think it would be shocking if the horrid combination of lingering Covid trauma, profound uncertainty over the economic impact of AI, and Trump threatening to ignite nuclear war on a dementia-addled whim WASN’T producing absolutely rancid vibes - even if economic indicators are technically decent.

i think it goes under-analyzed the extent to which tech bros and finance bros effectively merged around the start of the 2020s

and, as a result, a lot of the tech industry has muscled out actual tech—or even technical knowledge—in favor of wall street douches, but with silicon valley flavoring

Trust is necessary for social cohesion and you cannot trust anyone if there is no accountability.

This is so basic.

In a future, where crime runs rampant, only neurodivergant supercops ("NuCops") can stop them. Coming this summer,

I think our society really is grossly underestimating how important visible accountability is for social cohesion.

May we re-learn this lesson.

I mean ok. Think JUST about the catharsis and closure you get from attending the funeral of a loved one. Now think about what percentage of humanity missed a funeral during covid

Tactical Voting has been growing in U.K. elections. It's more about stopping a party you don't want elected, meaning sometimes voting for a party that wouldn't be your first choice, if they're the only party who can beat the party you really don't want.

errrrrrr

I think "single small step" is hahaha *sob* no that's not how it's gonna work here either alas.

Trump 2 is doing at least as much damage as Brexit, I'm SURE far more, and it's not even a year and a half in yet.

still 14 years in the wilderness is pretty brutal, ngl

BIGTIME. I want us to do the same dammit.

except over here it'd probably just end with someone getting shot.

we do that a lot. it's less whimsical unfortunately.

"adjusting your political strategy to the circumstances" is unfortunately not very popular with posters

a two party system has flaws; first past the post has flaws, but like, a FPTP multi-party system is especially unhinged

we went in completely opposite directions on trans rights and i still don't get the UK's peculiar susceptibility to TERFery. not just transphobia, specifically the TERF shit. we don't really fuck with that over here; if you're remotely feminist, you're for trans rights, overwhelmingly.

So yes, there's a faction of dems that tried throwing in the towel, but if they weren't outnumbered before by the other factions willing to fight, they will be soon.

1 day ago 31 1 2 0

It's structural. The Dems are center-left, and Labour is centre-left, but not in the same way (and not just because of the spelling).

Each US party encompasses factions which would be distinct parties under a parliamentary system. The Dems are more [Labour + LibDem + Green] than Labour per se.

also Sir Keir seems like there's really no there there at all tbh

but I gather there's no one who could do better within the ranks, which seems incredible, especially as unlike here you CAN just switch drivers over there, hell, the Tories did over and over. admittedly they all SUCKED but...

& it is actually kinda important to appreciate the distinction:

these are two very different models for how a centre-left party can respond to fascism & we need to back one over the other

maybe a little anecdotal, but i've seen this a few times

heck, there's several . . . uh, robust debates happening in my mentions right now that are uk lefties vs us libs about us politics, & it's really clear that the brits are operating on a labour = dems model

1 day ago 141 8 4 1

one thing i'm seeing is that american liberals pretty easily grasp that the logic of 'vote blue no matter who' just doesn't apply to uk labour

but uk progressives *really* struggle to get that the reasons they've turned on labour don't apply to the us dems
