The original Beren and Lúthien
Posts by The Wonder of Tolkien
I think about these truths often:
Life is short.
Today is something to steward.
Today is a gift to be enjoyed.
This is why we need fairy-tales...
A poem I wrote on the whole world being charged with a mythic glory!
Tolkien's manuscript and sketch of Helm's Deep.
The origin: Dragons, stories and language.
A poetic reflection on what I must do to keep my heart from the cold, gripping clutches of cynicism.
It's not enough to say that #Tolkien just wrote a good story. What made his writing enduring and piercingly impactful was that he was dealing with Truth in the highest sense - a moral beauty that is as ancient as Eden and as fresh as every sunrise!
"because they must.." (Tolkien)
This sums up much of the malaise of our culture and age. We need to see the world anew through imagination and myth.
"Beer and Beowulf" and competing with Tolkien at blowing smoke rings... !!!!
It's one thing to read work from your favorite authors, it's a whole other thing of delight to read about their lives.
One of my favorite lines:
“And Gandalf said: Many folk like to know beforehand what is to be set on the table; yet those who have labored to prepare the feast like to keep their secret; for wonder makes the words of praise louder.”
These are some of the most profound and beautiful things Tolkien says in his lecture On Fairy-stories - interweaving mythic joy and the Good News of Jesus. Read and let them linger in your mind and heart.
"The world will never starve for want
of wonders; but only for want of wonder."
- G.K. Chesterton
Going through old photos from our trip to New Zealand and just needed to post this -- hope it brings you joy!
My Tolkien books back in 2022 and most of the current collection now...
“This world is a wild and startling place, which might have been quite different, but which is quite delightful. It is not merely a world, but rather a tale; and not merely a tale, but a good tale.”
- G.K. Chesterton, Orthodoxy
We live in a mythic world.
Not a mechanized world.
A poem I wrote on the madness of this world and the need of the hour: courage and love.
More of THIS in our lives!
“The Resurrection was the greatest ‘eucatastrophe’ possible in the greatest Fairy Story…Of course I do not mean that the Gospels tell what is only a fairy-story; but I do mean very strongly that they do tell a fairy-story: the greatest.”
- Tolkien (Letter 89)
This is 2 minutes worth your time. @malcolmguite.bsky.social on some deep wisdom for our cultural moment from LOTR!
Yes :)
🚨 Breaking News 🚨
Reading #Tolkien has been scientifically proven to reduce stress, increase hope, produce a new love for nature, stir up wonder and lead you into wild adventures of courage, joy and sacrifice.
You want your life to change?
Read this book.
We all feel it, the sense that this is not how things are supposed to be in the world. #Tolkien felt it too, and he embedded the hope inside his story.
