The Columbine massacre was on this date in 1999. Instead of energizing our country to get gun violence under control, it kicked off a new normal. One of the best explanations ever of journalism's destructive impact on mass shootings came from Roger Ebert in his review of Gus Van Sant’s “Elephant.”

The British press pivoting to transphobia was a deliberate and conscious decision made because Brexit A.) happened, which they weren’t expecting, and B.) didn’t make anyone’s lives better. The press needed a new scapegoat to sell papers on so no one would think too hard about Brexit & blame them.

The section editor gets paid to do exactly the job they’re doing. They are not any more persuadable than the social media employee.

Either Babylon 5 (I have ideas for the aliens), or Land of the Lost (something much more in line with the surreal scifi vibe I got from the original, very much not the sarcastic dadaism of the Will Farrel movie)

Anecdotally I see noticeably fewer male primary (K-3) teachers now than I did 20 years ago and that is not a great way to run a healthy society.

Incredible work on pushing back against the white supremacy of David Eby and scaring him into submission.

Indigenous rights are still alive in BC

So we don’t need humans to run marathons anymore, right? The robots can do it for us. Do you suppose as many people will show up to cheer on the robots when they all run the race exactly the same way each time, in perfect synch with each other? People will still buy tickets to the Olympics, right?

Any day of the week I’d rather order a book from an easy to use website & pick it up from somewhere nearby THAT I PICKED IN ADVANCE, than mess around with paying for shipping, border fees, drivers calling me at work for to open my building’s front door, etc. Enshitification can eat Amazon for lunch.

Every local bookstore having a website that you can order books on, whether the store currently has that book on the shelf or not, has got to be a HUGE part of this. The Amazon website is big, stupid, full of ads, and shipping is wildly uneven (because they lump in so many third party sellers).

Footnote: these shows should talk to each other more. It's not great to have two shows happening on the same day, for example, even if they both work out pretty well for all involved.

People say the former when they have trouble getting into a really good show. Which I get! I would also like to get into SPX a second time some day. But bigger (more complicated, more expensive) shows doesn't solve anything for attendees. MORE shows solves both our problems.

More small indie-focussed conventions and art shows distributed over a wide geographic area is the way to go. "The Roundhouse is too small for VanCAF." Wrong! VanCAF shouldn't be the only show in town was the answer you were looking for.

Most of my plants have to live on the balcony.

They're allergic to every plant! I have to walk through the plant store with my phone open to a "will this plant kill my cat" website. The answer is usually "yes."

In the same manifesto, Palantir's owners argued that we need a national military draft, that soft power is over, and that we were too hard on Germany and Japan after World War II. I don't think that company should be allowed to exist anymore.

If you go to Rain City today and you want even MORE art, comics, and zines, come to Wildfire Books in New West, we're doing a mini convention.

Yeah, and don’t assume that existing hegemonies of power exist because they’re correct, because they’re “supposed to,” instead of existing because 100 years ago some countries had more tanks and missiles than other countries.

Pluralism is also good! The only alternative to pluralism is to build walls around an increasingly smaller & smaller cohort of people, and actively harm the people who don’t fit in that box to maintain your hegemony of power. No nation has ever not been diverse. What you do about it matters.

Let me instead defend the actual thing that people believe (but that technodicks do not). Equality is good! It’s bad to take an entire nationality, even one you have some critiques of, & say that they’re not as good as another nation. You’ll treat people unfairly & miss the flaws in your own culture

1 day ago 9 1 2 0

Who the hell ever said that equality & pluralism means criticism of cultures is forbidden? They always do this. Take a real statement, turn it into a completely different statement, and then argue against that second one only. Instead of even engaging with the thing literally no one ever said…

I HATE the weather app on my new phone. It takes a whole minute to refresh, it won’t do it automatically, and I don’t know why. All you have to do is report the weather from the weather website. It shouldn’t be this hard. I’m sure there’s some AI BS it’s doing for no reason that’s behind this.

One thing I don’t understand is “bad colors” there is no such thing as a bad color.

There are no single colors. Always colors work together in a context
