Two for one kind of day, very happy to share the results of a homegrown @usask.ca collaboration with Qiaoqin Yang's group. Here we share the tribological and antimicrobial characterization of nanocoatings for potential use on biomedical implants.
Thanks to Government of Saskatchewan, @evonik.bsky.social , @usask.ca , and CRSNG-NSERC for funding this work.

Although fibre was able to improve some aspects of health status, this didn’t result in an improvement in growth performance. We did, however, confirm that high IDP results in worse outcomes in challenged pigs, which we first observed in a previous study.
So happy to share the latest (and final) paper of Taiwo Erinle's PhD work. Our investigation focused on the impact of indigestible protein in weaned pigs. This time we looked at the potential for a blend of dietary fibre to mitigate the negative effects of high IDP in Salmonella-challenged pigs.
FACT OF THE DAY. 26 March 1953. In a huge medical breakthrough, US medical researcher Dr Jonas Salk announced that he had created the first polio vaccine. Polio cases fell from 58,000 per year in 1952 to 6,000 by 1958. Salk’s vaccine was replaced by a new one developed by Albert Sabin in 1962.
Am stoked and thrilled that our latest paper is now out. A longitudinal study of invasive E. coli from children in the Netherlands over 50 years

Happy new year!
Formulating diets with low IDP may improve resilience against enteric pathogens, especially Salmonella, and reduce economic losses during weaning.
👉 Bottom line: It’s time to rethink protein strategies in nursery diets.
💡 Industry Implications:
The negative effects of high-protein diets may not be driven by ETEC, as widely assumed with Salmonella appearing far more sensitive to IDP levels.
Simply reducing crude protein isn’t enough. IDP fraction matters for gut health and performance.
However, under Salmonella Typhimurium challenge, high IDP significantly worsened outcomes:
✅ Lower feed intake and weight gain
✅ More severe diarrhea
✅ Stronger inflammatory and oxidative stress responses
✅ Greater pathogen colonization and translocation
🔍 Key Findings:
Under ETEC challenge, increasing indigestible dietary protein (IDP) had minimal impact on growth, diarrhea severity, or immune status.
New Research Challenges Conventional Wisdom on High-Protein Associated Post-Weaning Diarrhea in Pigs
For years, ETEC (enterotoxigenic E. coli) has been blamed for post-weaning diarrhea (PWD) in pigs fed high-protein diets. But this study in Journal of Animal Science reveals a surprising twist:

Santa came a bit early. Very excited to see Taiwo's paper is online shortly after his PhD defense. This is the first paper of an exciting collaboration with Dan Columbus looking at nutrition and infection outcome in post-weaning piglets.
