The Way Out by Rebecca Buxton, Samuel Ritholtz - Hardcover Scholarship is a powerful tool for changing how people think, plan, and govern. By giving voice to bright minds and bold ideas, we seek to foster understanding and drive progressive change.

It's officially publication day for our book, The Way Out. Sam and I have worked on this since we first put our heads together in 2019, and it's fair to say that the context shifted under our feet as we were writing and thinking.

I think it's good to have a discussion of the philosophical arguments underpinning this whole debate though, because what one reads in most popular publications leaves all of these fundamental questions unanswered! Thanks for reading!

Thanks for this. It's going on the reading list! I tend to disagree with the differentiation of justifications to force people to fight. There may be lots of good reasons to serve. This is not what the argument disputes - forcing someone to fight through invoking the authority of a state isn't one

I’m interested in this: how would one make the argument in this case? Thanks for reading!

Ukraine is in need of manpower in its war with Russia, but does it have the right to conscript its citizens? What are the philosophical arguments for it and do they hold? I argue that there is no obligation to die for the state: felixbender724201.substack.com/p/the-obliga...

What's the issue with small boats arriving in the UK? Philosophical arguments Every other day, a few small boats carrying asylum seekers arrive at the shores of the UK.

What's the problem with small boats arriving in the UK? Loads of articles consider legal or political arguments, but few address the philosophical ones underpining this debate. Do any of them hold? Find out here: open.substack.com/pub/felixben...

Should rejected asylum seekers have a right to stay? Read the discussion between Leila Hadj Abdou, Eszter Kollar and myself to find out. Here is the original piece: comparativemigrationstudies.springeropen.com/articles/10.....

For your summer reading: In a new piece on the ethics of migration policy dilemmas, we explain why a 'myth busting' approach to migration policy is insufficient and sometimes misleading.

I would think that they may mean work primarily by poststructuralists and postcolonialist scholars. They will undoubtedly talk about citizenship.

Very excited for this conference on Refuge and Displacement at the University of Oxford later this month and only slightly intimidated on being the only other person in a panel with David Miller.

I agree, those are a problem, but are they not more a problem for the moral view on the matter? The issue might be there that one merely repeats contrary moral oughts that seem to have no purchase in politics. Sadly, I think we also see anti-migrant policies from non-far-right wingers

Yes, the paper does not make a moral argument. The problem is, that all sorts of moral arguments seem to have failed, especially perhaps in Australia. Perhaps there would be different outcomes if we started emphasising the important political roles that refugees can play (including their agency)?

Does anyone know of a good (!) AI detection software? I tried a few and get wildly different results (results range from 0% AI written, to over 90% for the same text). Which detection software / website do you use, or are they all useless?

I cannot stress enough how big this decision is. Al Kateb v Godwin allowed the Australian government to imprison people indefinitely even where they had committed no crime.
