Not all great legal minds are at top law firms - and not every one at a top law firm is a great legal mind.
It might not be a bad thing to dissuade people whose primary motivators are money and power from public service.

Also, congress could easily build and provide free housing for members.
Life sentences for corruption would be a pretty big disincentive.
At $300k, participating in corrupt activities is a) entirely voluntary and b) tantamount to treason.
Any journalist who attends this ought to be ridiculed so relentlessly that they sulk away with their tails between their legs and leave careers in journalism and media forever.

Eligible voters have agency and can make their own choices, but they have agency - they’re responsible for those choices.
