Weekend read: my friend @mushon.bsky.social's NYT Op-Ed left me crying. Crises that might feel abstract and far away from the US have real people and human suffering at their core. "What we need now is for humanity to overcome the cruelties of its own imagination". Well worth your time.

The @nytopinion.nytimes.com published an essay I wrote. A video from a #NICU in #Gaza brought me back to another night, 14 yrs ago, beside an incubator in Tel Aviv—where I became a father.
It’s about bounded solidarity, fragile lives, and what might still be saved if we dare to imagine otherwise.

On a somber note, ours is obviously not a success story. Fighting fascism in Israel is a work in progress, a painful, brutal daily reality. Unfortunately, as horrible as it may be to admit it, German fascism is not a thing of the past.

We will be using methodologies I developed with the Israeli-Palestinian peace movement A Land for All to rapidly prototype multiple images of the future in the form of screenshots (more on that in the comments) and to use them to map affordances for urgent action in the thick present.

So you understand why Trumpism persists on the fumes of imagined “outside threat” but you don’t get why Bibism persists on the waves of populist racism amplified by very real horrendous terrorism?

Netanyahu’s government doesn’t have the legitimacy to rule; it doesn’t have the legitimacy to wage war; and it doesn’t have the power, the interest, or the will to end it. As long as the war continues, Netanyahu is in power. This war protects no one but him and his cronies. It is our job, as Israeli citizens, to remove them from power. No one else can or should do that for us. But we ask our American friends to at least not stand in our way.

That’s pretty much what I wrote in the article:

As Israelis we are traumatized to our core. The terror induced victimhood blinds and isolates us beyond reason and against our better judgment. America is not a neutral spectator in this. It is currently pouring gas (gunpowder) to the fire.
