for flights that never come. We are grieving, but we are not silent. We are mourning, but we are not backing down. Baby Jake's life mattered. His death will not be brushed aside or forgotten. We will fight for truth, for justice, and for meaningful change — so no other family is ever forced to stand where we are standing now. - The Family of Baby Jake

the system was protecting itself rather than confronting the failures that led to Jake's death. Afterward, nurses discarded vials and materials that appeared to have been used in attempts to collect blood, leaving us with even more unanswered questions. Since Jake's passing, we have received countless messages from nurses, doctors, and patients - people inside the system - who have told us directly that his death
was preventable. They have confirmed what we already knew: the healthcare system serving our region is failing, and it is failing repeatedly. This week, another community member suffered two heart attacks and was told she would be flown to Kingston for the care she urgently needed. She waited seven days. She was never flown out. She suffered two heart attacks while still waiting in a community that does not have
the resources to treat her. This is not an isolated incident. This is the pattern. Our communities are being left without timely, competent, or safe medical care while leadership and staff continue to collect high salaries. Families are left to suffer, to grieve, and to bury loved ones while the system shields itself from accountability. We will not stop speaking out until there is real accountability - from
frontline staff all the way up to WAHA leadership. We will not stop until those responsible for these failures are removed from their positions. And we will not stop until there is a properly equipped hospital closer to the James Bay region, one capable of providing specialized care without forcing families to wait for flights that never come. We are grieving, but we are not silent. We are mourning, but we are not backing down. Baby Jake's life

Jocelyn Wesley 16h • PUBLIC PRESS RELEASE From Family of Baby Jake - Attawapiskat First Nation FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE Our family is living through a tragedy no family should ever face. We are asking a question that no parent, grandparent, or relative should ever have to ask: Why are we burying our grandson? Baby Jake should still be alive today. Instead, we are grieving a child whose death was entirely preventable — a child failed at every level by the healthcare system responsible for protecting him.
Fort Albany and Moose Factory are remote fly-in communities that rely on a teaching hospital hundreds of miles away in Kingston for specialized care. Two weeks before his death, Baby Jake had been flown to Moose Factory and diagnosed with croup. When his breathing became laboured again on April 9, 2026, his family rushed him to the Fort Albany hospital. He was blue, struggling to breathe, and clearly in distress. Yet no oxygen was given. No IV was started. No air ambulance
was ordered until later The doctor on call did not intervene to escalate his care. Instead, the nurse documented that he was "alert and happy," a description the coroner later contradicted and that our family knows was completely untrue. Within four hours, Baby Jake died at 10:55 p.m. from fluid in his brain and spine - still waiting for decisions that never came. What happened afterward only deepened our trauma. The nurse contacted NAPS and reported the
contacted NAPS and reported the death as a "natural process," leading officers to question grieving parents and relatives while failing to question the medical staff involved. At the coroner's meeting, NAPS officers - who were not invited - remained in the room, and a WAHA staff member was also present. Their presence made the process feel controlled, rehearsed, and far from transparent. It felt as though

The human rights violations described in the records about the RCMP’s ‘Native Extremism’ program are shocking and unacceptable for any human rights-abiding country.
An apology alone will not address this injustice
