A more universal puzzle I like being good at is Pips…

Haha, I’ve actually never thought about how difficult/annoying that must be for non-Americans. I imagine it’s like when I try to do the sports version.

If you love American music, this is monumental. The clarity on this discovered test pressing reveals Johnson's genius to an even greater degree than the '61 re-release of his 29 songs. You can hear the stabbing slide and delicate fingering on every string. Amazing.

It is amazing/embarassing how much personal pride I take in being good at NYT’s Connections puzzles.

This Rustic Ferry Is Getting Dismantled in Queens to Become an Artificial Reef The Prudence Ferry has been abandoned for years, but will get a second life in the waters off Fire Island this summer.

"What used to be an old vessel ... becomes completely colonized by anything from sponges, barnacles, hydroids and anemones."

had no idea so much labor went into prepping a future artificial reef! really cool story from @lillysabs.bsky.social + @haidee.bsky.social:

I watched both Strokes sets (streaming) at Coachella, and I have to say I really enjoyed both. And this was icing on the cake.

I have a friend who did this this year for a Beach Boys (or related?) LP. I kinda think he did it bc his wife has friends over this weekend, and he wanted to get away from the house…

I love these stories of scouting locations and filming in my neighborhood!

Some of my friends adore her, and I’m not casting judgement… But I can’t wait for the Geese / Strokes / Interpol / David Byrne bonanza that is Saturday.

Every year, I watch more and more of the Coachella livestream. This year has had a surprising number of (rock) acts that I actually like or want to check out. But I just turned on Sabrina Carpenter to give her a shot (maybe I’ve been too hasty) and NOPE.

I think there are others who don’t have the second gig, that have to scout around for other groups to tour with while these bands figure out touring plans.

However, for SW and Loma, I’m part of the business side of things, and I’m very involved in recording, so there has been a lot happening when not touring. And I’m lucky to have a full time job as a music supervisor, so my plate stays pretty full and all my eggs aren’t in the touring basket.

For me, initially it was tough to not continue to tour once the Shearwater and Loma tours ended, and then the Fiery Furnaces as well. All three bands could have started touring again more quickly (though all were hindered by the pandemic).

THE SENATE IS VOTING ON THE BOUNDARY WATERS RIGHT NOW!

Tonight, while most people are watching TV or putting their kids to bed, the U.S. Senate is taking a vote that could permanently end protections for one of the most beloved wilderness areas in America.

We just told someone we might be down to do some duo performances. I’m so excited to maybe get to play again soon…

Someone liked this old post, and I had the hardest time figuring out the context during which I would write this sentence.

Right now, I’d say in front of an audience because I miss it, since we haven’t done it in a while. But, I love how intense studio time can be.

They’re such different things! One feels like it lasts a split second and then it’s done - so ephemeral, but also a shot of adrenaline. The other feels so permanent - every single thing scrutinized and worked over, the tiniest sound is important and lasting.

🧵 on how I became a music supervisor:

I didn’t seek out this job when I started pursuing music in college (I thought I’d be a starving composer). But I’m sure glad this worked out…

Before graduation, I learned of a position opening up in WNET’s music services department (basically music supervision for the station). I started as a music cue sheet coordinator, and then just learned all the tools of the trade in my tiny department. Now, I’m the sole music person at the station!

I was a music composition/theory major in college and the summer after my freshman year, I was looking for a theatre or tv/film internship. I got one at Great Performances at WNET, and I stayed at that internship through college.

Happy to do a music AMA if anyone likes… ask me about the bands & music projects, or about music supervision stuff. I will try to answer all Qs.

And after an 8 miles hike around Central Park with D over the weekend, I’ve injured my foot, so I’ll be spending this week of gorgeous NYC weather on the couch, sadly. Maybe I’ll be able to walk to my fav cafe at some point for a change of scenery…
