Examining Religious and Racial Identity for Black Christians and Muslims in the United States | Journal of Race, Ethnicity, and Politics | Cambridge Core Examining Religious and Racial Identity for Black Christians and Muslims in the United States

It is always nice to wake up to a FirstView from JREP, but never more so than when you are working with a brilliant student, especially Eden Melles.

This article examines how religious identity (Muslim and Christian) shapes Black American political attitudes.

It’s really hard to bear the contrast on my TL of regular ass Minnesotans doing some of the bravest shit I’ve ever seen in the face of state sponsored terror followed by a deep blue state senator posting: “errrm how does taking Greenland help lower the price of groceries?”

There is a lot to contend with in this from @thrasherxy.bsky.social. I’m increasingly coming to this conclusion that schools aren’t capitulating, they are collaborating.

Do Racial Justice Frames Increase Support Among Democratic Constituencies? Evidence from Two Survey Experiments during the 2020 Georgia Senate Runoffs

I am thrilled to see my paper with the brilliant @tabithabonilla.bsky.social in print. We find that racial justice frames mobilize Democratic constituencies to support Democratic candidates at the ballot box. www.cambridge.org/core/journal...

As we conclude, these data provide "evidence that at least in 2020, BLM served as a potent message for mobilizing Black communities while not demobilizing white communities."

Always happy to work with @alvintilleryjr.bsky.social...and especially on a continuation of our 2020 APSR.

Here, we focus on what effect messages around BLM had in the 2020 Georgia runoffs--did these messages demobilize White, moderate and liberal voters while mobilizing Black voters?

Some researchers, like myself, care about knowledge production and finding the "right" answer.

Others care more about getting a publication based on saying that others are wrong rather than engaging in a discussion about what the current state of knowledge is and whether it needs to be corrected.

Congressional statutes don’t matter, judicial orders don’t matter. The only branch is the executive. This is the reality we need to teach in Intro to American Politics these days

The Compassion Trap: How the Shutdown Weaponized Democratic Values Against Democracy Itself When Opposition Parties Stop Fighting Because the Cruelty Becomes Unbearable. And Why They Shouldn't.

What’s the difference between compromise and capitulation? Compromise trades concessions. Capitulation pays ransom to stop deliberate suffering, and teaches your opponent that coercion works. There are effective responses to coercive bargaining. What we saw was not one of them.

A family friend was telling us about what her husband shared about his experience in Broadview before he was deported back to Mexico. She's been sharing to friends and family because she's just in disbelief & horror what her husband told her. She wasn't able to talk to him until he was in Mexico.

this morning, ICE went into a Spanish language immersion daycare and took a teacher from the building in front of screaming and crying kids and parents at dropoff and the daycare had to shut down for the day (near Lane Tech, where they were yesterday). Really hoping today's "theme" is not "daycare."

The director of student media at Indiana University was fired amidst a dispute between university leadership and editors at the Indiana Daily Student over what content gets printed in the student newspaper.

As director of student media, Jim Rodenbush did not directly oversee or have any say over the content published in the IDS, per a charter between the IDS and the university. But he told IndyStar his firing follows a series of meetings with IU Media School leadership in which it grew increasingly apparent they were expecting him to officially prohibit students from publishing news.

I spoke to a Venezuelan woman who was arrested in this raid and later released with her 4yo son. She said agents broke down their door, pointed guns at them and made sexualized remarks about Venezuelan women. When she returned to her apartment it was boarded up and all her possessions were gone.

ICE agents raid South Shore apartments; Trump says Chicago could become military training ground ICE agents raided a South Shore apartment building overnight as the city braces for a possible military deployment.

“ABC7 spoke to Pertissue Fisher, a woman who lives in the building. She said ICE agents took everyone in the building, including her, and asked questions later….’They was bringing the kids down, too, had them zip tied to each other.’”

It can’t happen here, you say. But it is happening.

When we use the concepts of "political violence" or "support for political violence," I've noticed that some are referring only to nonstate actors. Others also include state-directed political violence (e.g., using ICE on political enemies).

Huge differences in the implications

There are thousands of residents who are supposed to start in less than a month in hospitals across the US who cannot enter the country. There is going to be a major staffing crisis across the country but especially in rural and urban hospitals than rely on international medical graduates. #MedSky

"Women are PIs on 58% of the canceled grants, although they are PIs on only 34% of all active NSF grants.

Similarly, Blacks are PIs on 17% of the terminated grants, although they make only 4% of the total pool. Hispanic PIs and those with disabilities were twice as likely to lose a grant."
