I really hate when, the moment a controversy breaks about someone, people rush to say, “I always knew!” or “I always hated their work.” It’s this weird performance of purity, like they need to prove they were never tainted by liking the wrong person. It’s like… people can have liked terrible people.

I have never wanted to write the next Great American Novel. Where did that phrase come from? Is it shorthand for overall success? #writing
