And Yoon can't say the judge didn't take into account mitigating factors. The judge said Yoon was rubbish at planning but still handed down a life sentence.

When Yoon says the sentence was excessive, the prosecution can say, like the trial judge said, you should be grateful you aren't getting executed.

From a British law perspective (don't know if this applies the same way in South Korea), both the Charles I thing and the bad planning thing look like the judge foreseeing an appeal against sentence.
