Don't be shy to take on a little two-week side project. These five months will be the most precious three years of your academic journey.

I'm teaching a course on communication ethics dilemmas and while working up to two sessions on LLMs have been struck by how few people (students, staff, literature) come to the fully correct conclusions in this thread. I wonder why the spell of AI inevitability is so hard to break.

The techs we collectively call AI have use cases, but policy should be about solving problems in the public interest, not identifying ways to deploy specific technologies just for the sake of doing so. Yet that’s *still* how so many of these convos are framed. It’s exhausting. And harmful.

In awe at the gall in telling people you've never seen in person that they're using filters. Imagine going through life being that presumptuous. Apart from the whole being an incel douchebag thing it must be freeing, in a way.

I’m developing Plodding Recovery, a narrative game about a protagonist facing mental health struggles and slowly moving forward step by step.

I’ve finished writing one of the scenarios for the “Watch a video platform” command.

Cartoon showing a street in the rain. A man on a bike is delivering food, while another courier is delivering packages from Amazon. Two other workers are collecting garbage. Inside one of the houses on the street, we see robots labeled 'AI' sitting dry and warm, engaged in making a paining, playing the violin and writing.

From Indiepocalypse to Sindiegularity

Even if code & art stop being production "bottlenecks", nothing improves in terms of:

* attention: we're not getting more free time to play
* discoverability: algos and chaotic virality rule
* sustainability: prices fall to zero, only landlords win

IF YOU'RE UNEMPLOYED IT'S NOT BECAUSE THERE ISNT ANY WORK
JUST LOOK AROUND: A HOUSING SHORTAGE, CRIME, POLLUTION; WE NEED BETTER SCHOOLS AND PARKS.
WHATEVER OUR NEEDS, THEY ALL REQUIRE WORK.
AND AS LONG AS WE HAVE UNSATISFIED NEEDS, THERE'S WORK TO BE DONE.
SO ASK YOURSELE, WHAT KIND OF WORLD HAS WORK BUT NO JOBS. IT'S A WORLD WHERE WORK IS NOT RELATED TO SATISFYING OUR NEEDS, WORLD WHERE WORK IS ONLY RELATED TO SATISFYING THE PROFIT NEEDS OF BUSINESS.
THIS COUNTRY WAS NOT BUILT BY THE HUGE CORPORATIONS OR GOVERNMENT BUREAUCRACIES.
IT WAS BUILT BY PEOPLE WHO WORK. AND, IT IS WORKING PEOPLE WHO SHOULD CONTROL THE WORK TO BE DONE. YET, AS LONG AS EMPLOYMENT IS TIED TO SOMEBODY ELSE'S PROFITS, THE WORK WONT GET DONE.

Seems like there are no Dutch peeps in the comments here, so I guess I'll take this: This is 100% a PR move by a royal family that is entirely irrelevant for how the country runs (and that's a good thing). If she's ever actually called into combat I'll eat my clogs.

So many of my colleagues are using these things so much right now. At least now I know all their posturing about sustainability, ethics, and integrity were hot air (blowing out of a data center exhaust)

The guy who shot Good was filmed from 3+ angles, so to see recording as any kind of deterrent is crazy at this point.

If us communication scientists are having trouble seeing LLMs as anything but text predictors, imagine how dangerous these things are to lonely, impressionable people. If we want to anthropomorphize them, we should also hold them responsible for the harm they are causing others like we would a human

It's too niche for brick and mortar stores, but mechanical keyboards have also been targeting the writer hobbyists. DasKeyboard, for example.

Had two invitations this past week, neither of which seemed to want to afford any additional time given the timing of the request. I thought it was an American thing, so it's reassuring to hear this is weird to you as well!

Welcome! Welcome to Bluesky. You have chosen, or been chosen, to relocate to one of our finest remaining digital centers. I thought so much of Bluesky that I elected to establish my online presence here, in the protocol so thoughtfully provided by Our Benefactors.

1. LLM-generated code tries to run code from online software packages. Which is normal but
2. The packages don’t exist. Which would normally cause an error but
3. Nefarious people have made malware under the package names that LLMs make up most often. So
4. Now the LLM code points to malware.

I've always had voicing barks in an RTS game as my childhood dream job. First, they killed the genre, now they're killing the career as a whole.

They'll be recruiting people based off of fan dubs and mods, I think. That would mean VO careers depend on being financially stable with ample free time.
