look I know being an engaged citizen IS the work of democracy but it is also the work of elected officials not to create situations where everyone has to be mobilized all the time to prevent them from allowing some kind of Dickensian horror on a Sunday night while you're in between loads of laundry

News Analysis: For President Trump, a wide-ranging crackdown on mainstream media institutions and political opponents is not about hate speech, but about speech that he hates — namely, speech that is critical of him and his administration. nyti.ms/3VsCyO4

Smithsonian removes Trump from impeachment exhibit in American History Museum A temporary placard, on display since 2021, described the president's historic impeachments. Officials said the exhibit was restored to an earlier version following a review of legacy content.

Under pressure from the White House, the Smithsonian has removed Trump from the impeachment exhibit at the History Museum.

The exhibit now says that “only three presidents have seriously faced removal,” referring to Johnson, Nixon, and Clinton.

The exhibit now looks the way it did in 2008.

The cover of Ian M. Rogers’ new novel, Carcrash Parker and the Haven of Larpers shows a blue sedan surrounded by images of a wizard, castle, game station, digital clock, TV, running shoes, sword & shield, treasure chest, soldier in full armor, flannel shirt, and a stack of books with a small box on top. Definitely an 80s vibe.

The blurb reads: Tender, earnest, & completely original” —Sean Doolittle, author of Device Free Weekend

Can’t wait to dig into this fun read—the latest #novel from my friend and fellow alum, @ianmrogers.bsky.social!

His last book was insightful and hilarious, so I know (especially as a fan of D&D and Magic the Gathering) I’m going to love this one!

Real estate investors are purchasing more U.S. homes as high prices lock out would-be buyers The rise in investor home purchases reflects how much the housing market has slowed as traditional buyers are sidelined, according to BatchData.

Pay No Attention to the Big Beautiful Bill Behind the Curtain Sure, our health care, environment, and economy all hang in the balance of some two hundred mostly unpopular, mostly white men. And yeah, by Friday...

"Pay no attention to how all of this is being done to give tax breaks to the wealthiest people in the country. Society is about sacrifice, and sometimes we have to give up things like rural hospitals or food assistance for the poor so that billionaires can get more boats."

Trump’s war on Harvard was decades in the making. This letter proves it | Bernard Harcourt A message tucked into an old book serves as a reminder that the assault on the institution is part of a long-planned effort

"Liberal arts colleges & universities are a gem in the US, envied by people around the world. Their strength lies in challenging society’s strengths & weaknesses, & asking how to make the world more just with more freedom for everyone. Those are the true aims of higher education."

I feel SUPER old when people refer to events 30 or 40 years ago as having happened in "the 20th century" like it was a historical era, and I wonder if people in the 1920s felt this way too
