But challenges persist: โOne of the biggest hurdles isnโt financing- itโs land. Community resistance, especially over ancestral land, has led us to abandon some projects.โ
She emphasized the role of community engagement:
-Leasing land for turbines
-Supporting local farming
Panel Insight: Elizabeth Njenga
At #PEPConf2025, Elizabeth highlighted how KenGen, 70% state-owned, has scaled renewable projects especially geothermal & wind through concessionary loans from development finance institutions (DFIs) with generous terms and long grace periods.
The message was clear: green energy in the Global South must be people-centered, context-driven, and inclusive by design.

Concessionary financing helps but social barriers like land rights and population pressures often pose bigger roadblocks than capital itself.
Inclusive policy frameworks are critical ensuring governments, DFIs, SMEs, and citizens all play a role in shaping just transitions.
First Session Takeaway: Financing Green Energy in the Global South
Across Pakistan, Nigeria, Kenya, and beyond, panelists highlighted a common truth: the path to green energy is not just technical or financial itโs deeply social, structural, and inclusive.
Our second session today will focus "Towards a โjust green transitionโ - integrating national realities and inclusivity" Watch online at youtube.com/live/B9Zd0Vj... and share your thoughts using #PEPconf2025
He highlights the promise of CBAM, growing donor support, and modern farmer cooperatives as drivers of low-emission, climate-resilient agriculture.
